Is it okay not to have a period?

Quote  |  Reply

I got my period late to begin with (16 years old) and only had it once... I am 18 now and have not had it. I have recently gained weight to become more healthy and try to get my period. I have also tried to eat more fats.

Anyways, I haven't gotten it back! Am I supposed to just keep gaining weight until it comes? Is it okay for me not to have it at this point? Will it just come eventually? :/

Idk, I feel worried, and no one seems to have a solid answer:) I  will do what it takes.

I do understand I should go to my doctor. It's just I have been to my doctor several times in the past year & she has never helped me out much. I got blood tests done and stuff and everything was normal. The only reason I thought to ask on here was because no one in real life seems concerned except me.

Thanks for the advice about the BMI and how every situation is unique. I am going to try to figure mine out.

Thanks again <3

I agree with personal trainer and that WAS the point of my post. some women need a medical intervention ALONG with gaining some healthy weight.

we are not capable to give the OP any advice since we don't know that much about her. only a professional can direct her.

merylwhite1, I know you were referring to the OP. I just wanted to point out that I have never been underweight and I LOST my period. it is not just for people who are underweight. It could happen to any woman regardless of her weight. in my experience, I didn't go to the doctor right away and kept gaining as I thought this would solve the problem and I just missed the opportunity to treat another medical problem I was not aware of. so yes, gaining weight might help but it is not the only solution.

OK, I understand now. I'm sorry I misunderstood your original post! Sealed

Is there any other doctor you could go to? I have a couple of different doctors I go to; a cheaper one for everyday stuff and a more expensive one I go to who specialises in eating disorders, if I have a question about my health problems that relate to eating disorders I have had in the past.

My experience has been that some doctors have little or no idea about some aspects of health but can be very knowledgable about other areas; it depends what they were taught during their training and what their areas of interest were. You just need to find the doctor that suits you!

I am not sure. I just go to one doctor that my mom takes me to lol. Maybe she doesn't know much about my problem. I have mentioned it to my mom several times, but I am going to specifically ask her to call the doctor and see what she thinks. I don't want to unintentionally harm myself! I don't think we can really afford more appointments, but perhaps the doctor can just offer some advice.

By the way - you all agreed I need to gain weight just to be healthy. What would be a practical weight to be at? :/

How tall are you?

I didn't have a problem not having my period until my doctor told me I was a cancer risk.

So yeah...you definitely want to get that looked at ASAP.

My doctor said I was 5'7.5" last October but my sister measured me once after that and said I was 5'6". I guess the doctor should be trusted more though? lol :P

Oh wow, how scary! Have you succeeded in getting it back?

Well, let's say you're 5'7. A BMI of 18.5-25 would equate to 119-158lbs for you. If you're at risk of losing weight again (whether accidentally or on purpose), it's generally recommended that you try to maintain a BMI of 20 - or around 130lbs. Everybody is different and if you get your period back, you'll know you've found a happy weight :)

Ah, amenorrhea.

I've never had a regular period (sometimes skipping when under a lot of stress or eating improperly), but I lost my period altogether for over a year when I was anorexic. And let me tell you, I had a hell of a time trying to get it back :(

Apparently, if the body goes without a period for too long, it "forgets" to keep having it! Don't worry though, with hormone injections and birth control pills, it is possible to bring it back.

However, it is not good to not have your period for too long. Despite the pain and misery they bring with them, hormones do loads of good things for your body, and going without them too long can cause a lot of problems, especially bone loss and infertility. They say every woman who has ever suffered from amenorrhea has sustained some degree of bone loss.

Your problem could be due to any number of things: overexercising, low body weight, poor diet, even polycystic ovarian syndrome... so you need to go to the doctor and have your hormone levels checked as soon as possible. I can't stress the seriousness of this enough! Hope you get back on track soon :)
