Never thought I'd be making one of these topics!
I'm just wondering with weight loss will I get my period again? I have PCOS and Endometreosis, I got my period naturally twice ever since I was 13 (once at 13 and again at 16). I'm 5'4" and last I checked I weighed 248 (down from 284). I'm just wondering if I'll ever get my period naturally, I do not want to be on birth control. If not, are there ways without birth control (the risks/side effects freak me out)? I am on Metformin, been on it since July, if that helps any.
...just wondering.
I'm also wondering if I get to my goal weight of say around 120, would my PCOS/Endo symptoms decrease (or even "go away")?
I'm feeling a little meh today, I get TTOM emotions every month but never a period, and it feels like TTOM right now minus Mr. Red and his party.
The nearer you get to a healthy weight the better your chances of normal ovulation and menstruation. You're on the right medication already. If you're also following a diet that stabilises blood-sugars that should help with your symptoms as well as your weight.
Otherwise, ask your doctor what your prognosis is.
I agree about asking your doctor. On a med front many meds may or may not cause side effects in a person and so I encourage you to discuss those fears with your doctor too. You may be missing out on something that could really help you cause of those fears and or there may be alternatives. I am not sure if those things will be helped by weight but getting to a healthy weight will help prevent other health issues happening and will not hurt those things to get better. A healthy body can fight off things in a better manner. Hang in there.
Well thanks for the advice guys. :D I can't see a doctor till next year (I will actually have health insurance, oh my!), so I was just wondering if there was anything I could do in the mean time. Just to talk to my doctor costs $90, and since it's timed, it has to be a 10 min conversation or it will cost more (it cost me nearly $200 in July). In person, I mean. I can try calling her though.
I'll be interested in going back on birth control when I've lost weight (lower risk of blood clots, strokes when not overweight, but I don't want to lose my libido ever again....EVER!).
I've cut out most carbs, it seems to stop most of the shakes from coming every 2 hours, but I still feel weak on occasion.
I too have PCOS and didnt have my first period until I was 17. I am now 27 and have had a handful of natural periods. But the metformin helped, as did Birth Control. I have even had a daughter thanks to one cycle of BC. I have went from 280 (290 was my highest) to 240 and have had a period every month since losing the 40 lbs. So i went from obese to moderately overweight!!! And that is without any metformin or BC. Weight loss does help and I hope to get to my goal weight (180lbs. I am 5'11'' and have a very large bone structure) and maybe, just maybe not have PCOS anymore. Weightloss can erase the disease!! So I think your chances of have periods are good the closer you are to your goal.
There are doctors that you can talk to online, maybe you could look them up and ask for advice?
I also think that getting to a healthy weight would help bring back your periods. Until then, though, I would try bith control. Birth control may say it has a ton of scary effects such as heart attack, blood clot, stroke, and other medical problems, but that is just to cover their a**. Even allergy medicines have to post those "possible outcome" medical problems.
If you are concerned that birth control will mess with your fertility, so does amenorrhea (having no period). I believe that getting your period back with birth control (until you get it back naturally) would be less detrimental than not having a period until you get back to a healthy weight.
I also agree that you should talk to a doctor. If you cannot find a doctor to talk to for free online, tell me, and I'll try to do some research if you like. Good luck hun! :)
Aww very kind of you. :) I'm infertile so I'm not worried about not being able to get pregnant, I'm worried about the other risks (bone loss, cancer, to name a few). When I lose 10-15 more pounds, if it doesn't return by then I will call my doctor, but hopefully it does. She mentioned putting me on something briefly to help jump start it. I came off depo and depo has a reputation to keep a period at bay for over a year in normal women. >< I just worry because of my past.
Thanks guys. :)
Only reason I worry about BC is because I am overweight (and high blood pressure, on meds though) and being overweight increases those scary risks. But I *will* talk to my doctor, that's a guarantee, I guess I just wanted some support, to feel better till then. :)
Thanks so much.
Weight loss definitely brings back my period, even as little as losing 5 lbs! Dont worry too much. Stress is our biggest enemy. Good luck!!
There's a good book I recommend you get hold of..... Jennie Brand-Miller 'The Low GI Guide to Managing PCOS'. Many people I know have found it very helpful in understanding and controlling the condition. If you watch the calories at the same time you can find it also helps with weight-control.
And if you have to pay a little to see a doctor before next year, I'd have said that was money well spent.
Search d chiro inositol and pcos and do as much research as possible. I don't want to go into the whole story again (it kind of makes me sound like a commercial!) but it has completely changed my life.
I just want people who are going through the same mess as I am to maybe have some more knowledge to help. It frustrates me that all the doctors want you to do is pop pills to mask the symptoms. If they actually understood the problem and tried to fix that, the symptoms would lessen. Sorry, rant over! ![]()
This is such a sore spot for me and it really bothers me that so many women are having the same difficulties and the doctor's really aren't doing much to truly help.

I am the opposite and really I don't understand this. when I get closer to my healthy weight, I lose my period. Now, I have gained all the weight back and I got my period back.
Very confusing to me.

Hi all,
I am new to all this and am just learning about it. I have recently found out that I have PCOS. I can skip a period for anywhere from 2-5 months. I just started seeing an OBGYN. She started me on provera to get my period started again (since its been about 4 months) which I finished taking on Saturday (10/18). Today I have started to also take metformin to regulate my hormones and hopefully (fingers crossed) start to get everything back to normal.
My question to you is what type of side effects did Metformin have on you if any? Today is my first day taking it and I have an upset stomach yet, I believe that could be from what I have eaten or possibly the fact that I am getting ready to start my cycle. Can anyone tell me how effective this is and shine a little bit of some light on it.
Thanks!!
