not getting a period

Quote  |  Reply
i haven't had a period since early january, is this weight loss/food related? i am 110 and 5'6 and i get over 1200 calories every day (sometimes way more then that) so i don't think it could be eating too little? i am concerned because this has never happened to me but i guess it is kind of normal amongst women? does anyone have words of wisdom about this

i havent gotten my period since then either. Youre either eating way too little or not eating enough fat..you need fat for your hormones to secrete

okay that is interesting i guess the fat thing might be possible? mmm i don't keep ttrack of that so its hard to say. i am a vegetarian so i guess i might be low on fat.

i'm a vegetarian too!! Smile

i seriously TRY to eat enough fat but it hardly ever get above 20%. i eat peanut butter daily and even then its not enough

it's so frustrating :(

do you exercise a lot? sometimes running lots or working out lots can cause you to lose your period. i didnt' get my period for 7 months when i first got into training, but my body got more used to it, i guess. either ease up on exercise or wait it out (if thats what causing it) or it might be that you dont have enough weight on you. the human body is a very smart piece of work. if your body isnt capable of maintaining a child, it sort of....cancels the possibility of getting pregnant (to put it in layman's terms).

Your periods have stopped because you're clinically underweight ie. your BMI is below 18.  1200 cals represents chronic undereating in addition so you are definitely missing out on vital nutrition.  Try to increase your weight by around 14lbs and up your calorie intake to at least 2000 straight away.  If you are eating a very low fat diet, add in foods like avocados, olive oils, cheeses, nuts and seeds.

And do go to see your doctor.  It's absolutely not 'normal amongst women' for periods to stop if the woman is healthy.  But it's quite normal amongst women who are very ill and whose bodies are under medical stress.

Your problem is that you're underweight. In order to get your period back after weight loss, you usualy have to be AT LEAST 90% of ideal body weight. For someone 5'6, ideal body weight is 130. 90% of that is 117. So you should gain a minimum of 7 pounds. Also try increasing the fat in your diet.

i'm in the same situation but it's been almost 3 years since my period ceased.  the thing is i've gained weight but still my period is not back.
Can someone explain that?  I don't know what i'm doing wrong.

She's not underweight if she is a child. Just google 'child BMI calculator' and you'll see that she is in a normal range, because I weigh 103 pounds and am amost 5'6 and my doctor says my weight is in perfect ratio to my height. If she were an adult, she would be underweight. But that is a different situation. In regards to a missed period, you may not be eating enough fats to support the menstration process. If you are trying to eat 1200 calories, it looks like you are trying to lose weight, which isn't wise because you would be underweight according to a child BMI calculator if you lose more weight. So maybe just up your calories and fat intake and your period might start up again. Good luck! Sealed

'andreahe'... there is no mention of her age in the original post.   If her periods have stopped she is either underweight or under stress... however old she is.   And whether she's a pubescent child or an adult eating 1200 calories she is probably very malnourished.

'helpless'.... If you were undereating for a considerable amount of time you may have permanently affected your reproduction system.  And, if you've not gained enough weight yet, that could also affect them.  And, of course, there are lots of other reasons besides.  Do consult a doctor and ask to be checked over.  You may need ultrasound scans to see if there are any problems.

gi-jane: As far as I know, you can't do any irreperable damage to your reproductive system solely by undereating. I remember reading that somewhere.

And mcavan: Although you're not significantly underweight for a teen/child, I do think you're undereating. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to try to lose weight, as you're treading on thin ice being at a low weight already. Try upping to at least 1500 and see where that takes you [I maintain around 100-105 pounds on 1500-1600]. Good luck! :)
