I got my period but I'm concerned...

Quote  |  Reply
Well... I finally got my period after about 5 months about 2 1/2 weeks ago. It's finally ending.  However, I think my body retained a lot of water due to the lack of period. But anywho... in short... i lost an inch in both my waist and my hips putting me at 31 inch hips (prob a little less because I was using an old kinked cord and a ruler to measure) and 26 inch waist. I invested in a body fat/hydration scale. well... just to test it out... I weighed myself a little while ago. I always weigh at least 3-4 lb more in the afternoon than the morning because of my extreme liquid intake (I drink water like I'm a fish basically... had at least a few liters w/in a few hours of the weigh in) and my food intake of course.  Well... the scale said 108.8 lb... that was the same as i would weigh in the mornings before I had my period... and it said my bmi was 16.1!!!!! I am 5'4 btw... then it said that my hydration level was 60.2% and the regular is around 50%... so I blame that on all my liquid right before the weigh in. But I checked 5 times just to make sure that scale was telling me the truth.  I knew my BMI was on the low side anywho... but not that low!! i'm scared to weigh in the morning!!!

Could this scale be wrong?! I don't know... I just need some support plllease!

I'm not really too familiar with weight fluctuations and scales, but I do know that I lose weight when I am on my period. (Then gain sometime after.) It is normal to fluctuate throught the hormonal cycle. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Congrats by the way for getting your period back!!! That is awesome news! *does a dance of joy*
Did you input your height into the scale correctly? Being a math geek, I calculated that it seems your scale thinks you are 5'9". With your measurements you gave us, it looks like your BMI is actually 18.7, just barely in the healthy range. Congratulations on getting your period back, that's great news. I hope you are able to continue your recovery and not get stressed out by your new scale.
yeah it says 5'4 smack dab... for sure. i donno! i'm confused!
okay... i looked at the scale... its body fat % is 16.1% for me... is that different than BMI?
Body fat % is different than BMI! That would explain a lot...
so can someone explain? is 16.1% bad or alright?
16.1% is pretty low body fat for a woman.  Body fat percentage is, quite simply, the percentage of your total mass that consists of fat (the rest is bone, muscle, connective tissue, et cetera).  The estimates of a healthy body fat percentage for a woman vary, but a rough estimate might be between 20-25% body fat.   BMI is a measurement of your total body mass as it relates to your height.  BMI is based on a mathematical formula using height and weight that estimates overall body composition.  Does that help?
Can I ask how much your scale cost? I want one that tells me body fat % and all that jazz, but I don't know which one to get and I'm not really in the position to be buying another one jut yet, but yours sounds great. Congrats on getting your period again. You sound really on track IMHO. :-)
i bought it at walmart for i think 45? haha either 40 or 45!
dont worry what you weigh at the end of the day. you will still have food and water and wast in your body. so your naturaly going to be 2-6 (for me could be larger for others) lbs heaver its nothing to worry about in the morning you will be right back were you were.
Your question, from what I understand, is that you're concerned that you have lost weight and considering that you need to do just the opposite, this is a bad thing.

Well, if your evening weight is what your morning weight used to be, maybe you did lose a few pounds. I doubt it's from your period, though that might account for a few ounces.

If you have lost weight, then you know what you need to do. Gain those few pounds back and stay healthy. And yes, 16% body fat is quite low, but those scales are notoriously inaccurate at calculating body fat, so I'd get that double-checked by a doctor before freaking out.

Good luck sweetie.
