Weight Gain

I only just started refeeding (2500) two days ago and my BMI is now around 15.4 maybe less due to water retention.

Yesterday I got my period. How is this even possible at such a low weight? I haven't weighed myself since I increased to 2500, I couldn't possibly of put on enough weight to get my period in two days could I?

Last time I did refeeding I didn't get my period until my BMI was around 17.

I am very confused and it has thrown me.

I am thinking that if I have my period now then why do I need to bother gaining anymore weight?

I can understand your confusion, but this happens sometimes i had a friend who got her periods back at a bmi of 13. lack of periods is not the only proof you need to gain. I t might not even be a proper cycle. this is a good thing,as you will be protecting your bones and are less vunerable to osteophrosis which you truly wouldnt want. everybodies boidies are different. you so still need to gain to repair the rest of your body all your muscles and organs tissues etc . think what you would say to me if it was me . please please stay focused and look at all the reason you are doing this at a bmi of 15 you cant possibly lead a happy healthy life periods or no periods xxxx

Thank you for the reply and the reassurance. I rationally know you are right, it's just ED trying to twist things. I will keep pushing for weight gain, it just threw me because it was so unexpected!

I have always got my period back at very low weights. I know that can set confusion and the ed voices off but for many it is not a sign of health. I still ended up in a cardiac unit and with osteoporsis back when from being underweight/malnurished. You are still at risk for many health complications being so low. Please stay strong on the plan as though you may have a period you don't want to have a heart attack or kidney issues etc. Plus this is about mentally as well.

this is not that uncommon...I've had my period under bmi 14 before. I've also got it at lower and lower weights over the years. I currently have regular periods and am still aiming to gain quite a lot more weight. basically, periods are not the only indicator of health, I've had them before and been very unwell both in terms of weight and other indicators. there are far more benefits to attaining a genuinely healthy weight than just a regular cycle.

I think a big part of me has been convinced that getting my period back is a sign that I have reached my optimum weight, I really believed it was a sign of a complete return to health.

Thanks for letting me know that there are still dangers and that I still am too underweight, I honestly didn't think I could still have problems with osteoporosis or my organs once I started my periods again.

I am definatly going to aim to keep gaining.

I got my period back when I was around BMI 13 or 14. It just means that your hormones are functioning again and that you're getting a good amount of fat in your diet. Doesn't determine your overall health. Plus - just because you got it once does not mean it will come back regularly.

Absence of menstruation is only one TINY part of being underweight and anorexic - its not the end-all be-all of emotional and physical health. Keep working your way up. I know its hard, but you can do it. And you'll feel 100X better at a truly, healthy weight. I've noticed that as I've gotten to a healthier weight, my periods are far less painful and much less draining for instance.

That's really reassuring to know cause this one has been so painful. Thanks for the reassurance, I have got back on track after the initial 'shock' of it coming back - because it was very unexpected.

Yes exactly having your period come back definitely does not mean you are in perfect health, especially since 2 days of refeeding obviously is not enough to make your body healthy! Not having your period is only one physical symptom of an eating disorder, and many people still continue to get their period even if they are at extremely low weights, just like others said.

I'm very glad you're still pushing through this to recover :) Keep it up!! Don't let bitch ED win!

I'm fighting her with everything I've got =)

Thanks for the support. x
