period weight

Quote  |  Reply
Dum question.... Does everyone gain a few extra periods during their period? I went away last thrusday to New Orleans for a wedding weighting 135, got my period on that Friday, watched pretty much what I ate and drink, still have my period and I still weigh 135 this morning so I am not sure if I still have the period weight or not. How soon will the period weight come off. I am not eating the normal 1200 calories a day. Its just to much I think to handle. I am running about 3 miles a day and the weight does not seem to be going anywhere. Help!!!!

YES YES YES!!!!

It happens to me every month.  Its can vary between 1-5 lbs usually for me.    I find that after a few days it starts to go away.

It is actually why I did not weigh myself today.
Absolutely! I gain atleast 1-5 pounds on my period. more when I was using birth control. Honestly what I would suggest is to figure out your measurements and go from there. I am finding (i am in your same boat with weight) that the scale is making me slightly crazy and very upset so I am just going to focus on eating well and measuring my body

Keep the running up though! You might gain some muscle (weighs more, could be why no change?) and you'll feel great. I am right with you though, I have been working out 5-6 days a week and I am steady (as a rock, sighs) at 140...to heavy for me but my body wont get rid of it. Are you eating under or over 1200? If its under I would say really try to eat just a bit more, if you are running you need that food. If you are over, you are probably actually eating the proper amount. All I can say is stick with it, and you are not alone!!
Thanks all!! I feel so much better now to know I am not the only one in the same boat. I really do need to increase the food intake, I am just so nervous about gaining the weight back. I still want to lose another at least 20 pounds to feel good about myself again its just becoming harder everytime I look on the scale and its not moving. I am going to try the measurements idea that sounds like it will work. I have gone from about a size 14-12 to a size of about 6-4 in about 7 weeks I am just afraid its going to come right back on after I start eating more.
If you are not eating 1200 a day, you are hurting yourself. And if you are running 3 miles a day. then you need to eat much more than that. There are plenty of people on this site who will attest that eating less doesn't always mean losing more.
*points at sparkles*

what she said.  Put your scale away for a week, cause the water weight's gonna lie to you, and eat more than 1200 cals.  At the end of the week, the water weight will come off.  eating less than 1200 is just gonna encourage your bod to hold onto whatever fat it can.
Does anyone know a good alternative birth control pill that doesnt cause weight gain. Or Has anyone tried the shot or patch. Although I heard the shot is really horrible for skin. I did try the nuvaring for awhile, but I wanted to try the pill again. Right now I am taking desogen.
I'm not the person to ask about the shot- I had a *terrible* experience with it, gained about 35 pounds, was depressed for months.  Same thing happened to my roomie, except she gained about 60 pounds (she was on it for longer than I was).  But I know people do have positive experiences with it.

If you're looking for a really reliable birth control with *no* hormones, you might try the copper IUD.  I did a bunch of research and it's *at least* as effective as the Pill.  I have a friend who has one and had no side effects, you don't have to worry about it for another 10 years... the initial installation cost is a little high, but then you don't have to buy birth control for 10 years.  the IUD scares of the 70s really put Americans off the IUD, but most of the rest of the world uses them all the time.  No hormones at all- can you beat that?
Thanks for asking this question! I just started my period today and weighed myself and I'm 1.5 pounds heavier! I was in shock for a moment until I realized it has to be from water retention, etc. So, I'm going to put away the scale for a week until my body gets back to normal. :)
Answering bc question...

I'm on the nuvo ring. Most women are intimidated by it but it doesn't cause weight gain, no pills/patches to remember, no dr appt every three months, and you have less periods and not as bad cramping.

My dr's nurse went to a bc convention (whatever that is) and she said the ring is suppose to be the best around for giving steady hormone doses. I use to do the once a month shot (my body will not handle the once every three months) until it was recalled for not being effective enough (gasp! Just what a girl wants to hear!!!)

Just my 2 cents...

babe - just read you're on the ring... what don't you like about it?
Glad to read I'm not the only one.  Tired, crampy, grumpy and craving added to weight GAIN just lead to a really nasty Tia.  Knowing I'm not alone makes it a bit better.

I'm going to have to look into BC again.  I like knowing for sure when this mess is going to happen.  I really want to try the Seasonel (3 months pill, then off for a week, then 3 months...).
I have been on the Nuva ring for about 3 years now and I love love love it!!
I was on it, then I switched, I dont know why. I go to planned parenthood. They might have been out of the ring. But I definatly want to get back on it. Cause I did feel better on that than the pill.

omg im soo glad you told me this. i used o loosed 6-8 lbs the 1st week of dieting. granted the heavier someone is the more they loose, so don't freek out girls. but this time i only list 3 and in the the middle of the week i gained back 2! i thought it was because i was getting older (im 24) (and i know thats not old just older) but then i thought it might be becasue of my period and i hope this is the answer.

backround:

Im on weight watchers (not going to the meetings) last time i went on it i lost 60lbs in 4-5 months (going to the meetings). I got a boyfriend started going out to dinner and gained it back in 3 years. now im on it again,  and ant to loose 80. well id be thrilled with 60. this site really helps becasue it makes you realise if you dont loose as much one day you can see the calorie intakeand how that might effect it vrs the points. and it tells the you percentage of carbs/fat/ and protien you are eating (which i read should be 60-20-20) and it give you a grade at the end of the day which is cool. so good luck everyone and dont freak out if you gain a little on that time of the week.

There is no birth control that isn't going to affect your hormones and cause weight fluctuations.  You might want to check into Natural Family Planning or charting your cycle...there are some great free websites that give you instruction and charting software.  (www.woomb.com is the Billings site...its great)  Then no worries about weight gain or what the excess hormones are doing to your body.

Just my two cents!

I agree with saintlymama, I have had nothing but problems with birthcontrol. I was on the ring for about 2 months and my weightloss completely stopped into the first week of use. I have used the shot, the patch and the pill, and had problems with them all. Different probs with each, I just decided to go the natural way. All thoses fake hormones really screw with my system. I track my cycle with www.mymonthlycycles.com its free too!

goodluck to all!

I am 5'4" and got tired of weighing 131.. so i started a diet which consisted of 1200 calories a day - 21 days ago.. got down to 126 ( YAY!! RIGHT??? ). wrong Frown........ arg...............all of the sudden 3 days before my period i weigh 129 and then 130 today and i am just miserable.. ALL THAT WORK.. and i agree - maybe i ate a little bit more during pms- but not more then 300 calories over my regular 1200 calorie diet thing + i have been at the gym all week...VERY FRUSTRATED... I want to weigh 124 - but 126.. i was in HEAVAN....

I am charting my weight daily, because i dont need surprises like this anymore.. will let you know my weight after my cycle is over.. i really hope it goes back down again or i will just flip out.. i have been SOOO HUNGRY and DIETING FOR 3 weeks.. its just not FAIR to gain all the weight back for no good reason.

I had a really bad experience on the shot as well.  It was a few years ago so maybe it's gotten better but I was really, really depressed.  And I have never been depressed since or before.... so it is not in my nature.  I half attribute my break-up from my beau to the manic person I became on that shot.  I couldn't control my emotions for the life of me! Just beware.

Thanks for all the info on weight gain.  Anyone else having problems controlling what they eat during this time!?!  Period comes around and I binge on sweets, sweets, sweets.... I'm trying hard to control it right now!

No experience with contraception, but I gain weight three days before my period (about 3 lbs). My appetite goes up too. By day 2 of my period, it falls off at an alarming rate. I know it is mostly water weight though.
