Petition: remove JewWatch.com from Google

Quote  |  Reply
When performing a search for the word "Jew" on Google, one of the first results
is a site that has been notorious for being anti-semitic. The site is
called jewwatch.com. Google is the #1 search site and the fact that
one of the first search results would yield an anti-semitic site is all too
common in a growing era of increased Anti Semitism... In order for
Google to remove this site, they would need a petition of over 500,000
requests.

If you support this request, please sign here and/or pass it on. Thank you

Thanks!

I'm Jewish but I won't sign the petition.

If the petition actually works, then jewwatch.com will be invigorated and be able to spout off about how the Jews have so much power that they can have the site removed from Google.

My advice- ignore the site and forget it exists.

Sorry lovedstonedtim, but this is an urban legend about google policy.

The online petition site you wrote of does exist  but the only instance in which Google will interefere with its searches is in case of illegal practices like child porn.  Their stand is: "We find this result offensive, but the objectivity of our ranking function prevents us from making any changes."  They do not have a policy about recognizing signed petitions like removejewatch.com.

This is per Snopes, halfway down article.

As well, I understand that in order to have credibility a petition needs more then names - specifically signatures and address references.  I think its an honorable thing being pursued and theres nothing wrong with trying to overturn Google's policy.  I just dont see it happening.

Just for that comment, I'll go ahead and ask you-when has an internet petition EVER worked?

I'm not looking at the site you posted because it will probably sicken me, but the fact remains that it's the internet. Bad things are on the internet. You'll have to live with that or disconnect it.
Bleh, let them have their site...who cares if its on google. People are free here, as long as they arent running around bonking jews on the head or hurting people in any way, then its fine.

They are just sad because the jewish religion came before theirs hehe.
Unfortunately, freedom of speech extends to people who are completely ignorant. Sad, but true.

Hahaha, you know it will happen, too. It's an anti-anti-Semite conspiracy!

Ignore it. Getting annoyed with the site will just give the people behind it a sense of legitimacy.

Definitely needs to be ignored. I never would have heard of it except for this thread. Why do them a favor by providing publicity?

If somone's an anti-semite and looking for a website to validate their ideology, I don't think that the lack of a listing on Google is going to be deterrent to finding the offending website anyway.  It's not like there aren't a dozen other just as effective search engines that will still list it, or knowledge of it among anti-semites isn't already discussed on a number of message boards.

And, as noted above, the freedom of speech does still apply to idiots.  Watch out about advocating the removal of unpleasant opinions - someday the unpleasant opinion might just be your own.

Umm.. excuse me, but the word "Jew" is often considered racist.  Next time google "Jewish" or "Judaism."
Dare I ask, but exactly what do you call someone of the Jewish faith, then, tracker?

"Jew" is racist??

wow, I never knew this to be true.  My Boyfriend is Jewish and his mother calls him a crazy Russian Jew all the time...  lighthearted of course, but Ive now started calling him this...  If its racist he never told me...

I am Jewish and to the best of my knowledge, Jew is no more racist than "Christian" or "Muslim". It's just a descriptor.

Thanks HK... makes me feel much better now.

Although, I'm sure if it was offensive in anyway, my boyfriends mother wouldnt be calling him that...

My Bad then... I just assumed the preferred title is Jewish.

*nods* No worries, tracker :)

I'm not Jewish, but it seems to me that it's only racist if you're using it in a certain context.  Yeah, a member of the Aryan Nation is being racist, but if you're just referring to another person in a general context, it's pretty inocuous.  Does it really bother that many people?

It's not racist unless you intend for it to be.

There are other terms that I'm not going to mention here that are definitely racist towards Jews.

Isn't this forum thread, by definition, open for discussion?

just sayin'...
Uhh.... As far as I'm concerned, the only race is the human race, so you can't really be "racist" by calling somebody a Jew.

And I agree- I'm Jewish as well, but it's not worth increasing publicity for that site. Signatures don't do very much; actions do.
I think I know where tracker is coming from.  I remember when people might call a non-Jew a Jew as an insult drawing on negative Jewish stereotypes, eventhough the term was additionally used in it correct sense too. The word still somewhat has that old derogatory connotation to me unfortunately when I hear it even though I know its actually an innocent, accurate term.  I wonder when (and hopefully if) calling something 'gay' stops being a put down if it will still have that connotation for our kids generation.

BTW santonacci, great quote! As well, lovestonedtim's intentions were good.
