I thought, when they discovered that it was causing heart problems in previously healthy people, that they pulled Fen-fen from the market and wasn't even allowed with a prescription? Is what is out now a 'new and improved' version?
Yes, my starting dose was 37.5mg once daily. I have been on it before and found success. I stopped taking it before due to not having insurance at the time. This was about 10 years ago. I lost weight when I was taking it.
I started weight watchers (great tool!!!) and lost 75 pounds (slow and steady wins the race). I hit a wall last November and, no matter what I tried, nothing would change. I couldn't gain or lose weight. I am very active and ate several times a day. My husband is a diabetic and I follow the same eating patterns as him, which is several balanced meals each day. These are healthy meals. This really works. I became frustrated with no changes happening. I went in and spoke with my doctor about all of this. She suggested Phentermine. Her hopes were to boost my metabolism and then slowly drop the dose to take me back off of them. It worked...
Like with ANY substance available, there are side effects. However, it is up to the individual to educate themself on this prior to taking them. There are risks involved with any medication we take. Everything will have pros and cons. My sister has terminal cancer. She has the "option" to partake in treating this with chemotherapy. With this there is a chance of "possible" side effects (many can be worse than what is killing her). I stated earlier my husband has diabetes, which has resulted in him shooting with insulin 12 times a day (sometimes more). He also has to take several other medications for his heart, liver, kidneys and more. All of these meds have "possible "side effects. I won't go on. I, along with others I know, have not experienced any of the "possible" side effects that may come along with taking Phentermine. We are just all aware they could happen. There is risk in everything we do. You just never know. Most of us drive to work every day knowing there is a risk we could be in an accident, but we still do it.
I am sorry I know I keep going on. I know you are an intelligent enough individual to know there will be a risk in most everything we do....
I wish you luck in whatever choice you make. My goal here is not to sway your decision to either side. :-)
The Mayo Clinic has a very helpful article on the use (and dangers) of using phentermine... http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/phentermine/ AN01715
(Part of the article ... )
Given the few long-term studies on phentermine, it's approved only for short-term use (a few weeks). Unfortunately, any weight lost during this time is usually regained. Phentermine side effects may include blurred vision, dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability and constipation. Phentermine also increases heart rate and blood pressure.
=^..^= MOLLY
I do have the constipation from it (really badly, Special K cereal seems to help), the dry mouth and my bp has been up since starting it.
I think with anything weight can be regained if you don't change your habits of eating and exercise. I started taking it 5 months after my weight loss began because I hit a plateau. It has worked for me and I personally love it.
I got mine filled today. It cost $30 at walmart. If my doctor had wrote on the prescrip it was for obesity and another medical condition then insurance would have covered........but I didn't bother since my insurance copay is $20 anyhow.
Still haven't decided about taking it. I did find out that my aunt and cousin are taking it and both seem to be ok with it.
11 months later LoL
I have been on Phentermine for 5 days and I've lost 15 lbs with that, diet and exercise.
For me the benefits are:
- Decrease in appetite. I have to remind myself to eat more often than not.
- Dry mouth, which seriously increased my water intake, I believe that's also helped with the big loss so far.
- Energy, to clean, care for the kids, do whatever. My life is much better now than it was even 2 weeks ago.
- It hasn't had any adverse reaction on my panic disorder. I was concerned about heart rate, but it hasn't been an issue at all. I'm assuming that's because peoples bodies react differently to meds.
- No matter what I did previously, I couldn't lose weight, now I'm losing it, so I am not going to turn away from that.
- The *only* side effect I've had is the dry mouth, but as I've stated, that's a good thing as it increased my water intake big time.
- It's only costing me $30 a month, that's a lot less than many other pills, diets, clubs or what not.
::hops off her soap box::
I was afraid to try it, but I don't look back, not even for a second, now.

Took first dose of Phentermin at 1PM side effects were jitters (severe) High energy (my brain was going crazy.) I did not eat anything until 6PM that evening. My dinner consisted of about 200 calories. At 10PM I was still wide awake so I took an ambien to fall asleep. Slept from 11:30PM to 6AM. (normal hours of sleep are 10PM to 7AM)
August 20, 2008 (Wednesday)
Took dose at 7:30AM. Jitters (not as bad as the first day but still very noticeable) Very high energy, cotton mouth (I drank probably two gallons of water that morning), no appetite from the time I took it until around 5PM. The appetite suppressant part of this wears off in the evening. I ate sensible meals during the day even though I wasn’t hungry for them but in the evening I was still hungry and felt like I ate everything it site. I could not get tired. I took half a dose of ambient and slept from 11PM to 5AM.

Took Dose at 6AM. Same effects as above. My appetite was gone all morning and early afternoon but in the evening I was constantly hungry. I could not fall asleep at all. I tried laying in bed and just relaxing but my body was just going crazy. My mind was going a million miles a minute as well. I took an ambient to try and get some sleep. It worked for about two hours. I got out of bed at 4AM.
August 22, 2008 (Friday)
Took dose at 6:30AM. The jitters were pretty much gone. Still had cotton mouth and drank water like a fish. My appetite wasn’t effected as much this day. I was pretty much hungry all day and at night after all my calories allotted I still wanted more. I feel like my body went into shut down mode this evening. I was yawning and actually tired. I was happy that I might actually get some sleep. I went to bed around 11:30PM. I woke up tossing and turning and looked at the clock and it said 1AM. I stayed in bed until 3AM but not I’m writing all this down.
It’s almost like this stuff gives me such a high amount of energy that my body doesn’t even want to do anything. The effects and feelings I get from this aren’t something that I like. I don’t like the feeling of being constantly awake with my mind racing and my body jittery. I don’t like that it’s so strong that I can’t take ambient to help me sleep at night.
It’s only been four days but I’m wondering if anyone else has ever felt like this….
I’m wondering if its even worth it. I miss my sleep. I need something that will curb my appetite in the evenings. This just isn’t doing that….
I just started taking Adipex 37.5 (phentermine) 1x daily. You have to take early in the morning, drink lots of water, which it will make you have dry mouth. I do have some nights where I can't sleep. I do have high energy. I am not hungry...I have to keep up with the time and make myself eat on my doctors schedule. I would recommend calling around to different pharmacys to get the best price. I got mine filled at Winn Dixie and it cost $21.00 for 30 pills. Walgreens and CVS was $35, Walmart was $25.00.
I have been on for 2 1/2 weeks and have lost 11 pounds. If you don't eat, drink the water, and follow the rules you will make the symptoms worse. My doctor said that it takes about a week or so for your body to get use to the pill.
