Pilates tape/DVD suggestions?
I took a look through some of the forum posts and didn’t see this one, so I’m sorry if it’s been posted before.
I know joining a Pilates class would probably be the best option since it would mean an actual human instructor, but that’s not an option at the moment. So, does anyone have any recommendations for a good Pilates workout video that I could buy to work on at home? I’ve been reading some reviews on Amazon, but I’m looking for some more personal experience type input from my fellow CCers.
the MTV pilates mix, i love it.
I got one at Walmart for less than $10. Its a "Crunch" Pilates / yoga mix that is great. It'll work the muscles and also not real difficult to follow.
I also have the Crunch Pilates/yoga mix DVD and I like it a lot. The instructor gives you tips on your form and what you should be doing (which is helpful if you haven't been to a class). There are a couple of beginner ones that aren't bad -- hard to give you more of a recommendation since I don't know if you've ever done Pilates or what kind of shape you are in.
I've never done Pilates before, but I've recently gotten a number of recomendations for it from other people and checked it with my doctor because of arthritis in my knees. She said Pilates would be fine, as well as Yoga, or the like that would improve my leg strength and flexibility would be a good idea. As far as what kind of shape I'm in, I'm gonna have to say relatively out of shape. I've certainly had worse points in life for how in or out of shape I am, but I've also had better. So I'm definately at a beginner's level.
You may want to check out Pilates Conditioning For Weight Loss. Suzanne Deason has this workout plus a bunch of others. I find her a bit . . . soothing . . . but the workout would be a great place to start. She really explains poses well and the DVDs I've gotten of hers also show modifications to fit where you are.
She's also got one called Yoga Conditioning for Women. I haven't tried that one but you might be able to rent it from a video store or check it out from your local library.
I love the Pilates for Weight Loss with Suzanne Deason, (giam brand) its very soothing and relaxing - yet effective! I tried Windsor pilates, it was good but I think very advanced, I put my back out doing that one! ouchie! :)
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll definately check out the Suzanne Deason ones, and the Crunch vids. If I end up sticking with this (It's mostly down to how well my knees take to it) I'll need some variety to switch it up with after a couple months. Much appreciated!
