Pity Human Bodies Havn't evolved better

Quote  |  Reply

Its a bad thing that human bodies store fat and put on weight, because it causes loads of health problems.

They wouldn't store fat if they were perfect, however much you eat.

I guess teenage acne and male pattern hair loss are similar flaws to human bodies to putting on weight.

i'm sorry, but i have this visual of millions and millions of tiny fat cells filled wth cardboard.  because--you know--we can't digest cellulose.  that's the problem with fat people; they eat too damn much cardboard.

Wait, I thought cardboard was negative calories and I'd lose weight by eating it. You mean all this time, I've been wrong???

moonbay, most of the stuff he spews is "a little out there" - just ignore

If fat cells stored things that couldn't be digested I'd be full of coins...i was a penny eater as a child

Next time I find a penny along the banks of the river I will have a whole new concept of how it might have gotten there.

I'm an anthropologist... though not a PhD... yet, and this is a very interesting thread. Our culture has evolved much faster than our bodies and as a result are adapted for a completely different lifestyle (hunter/gatherers). Insteadof walking long distances to find food and water it is at our disposal. We basically only need to walk as far as our cars are parked! Also, humans view of fat has changed over time. It use to be viewed as beautiful and fertile. Also, a sign of wealth. Now, it is a recent cultural change (primarily in western and developed countries) that people view fat as unappealing and "bad".

There is a wonderful study done in Western Samoa on how womens' view of fat has drastically changed with the introduction of TV. Older generations view heavy women as beautiful, fertile, and normal while the younger generations who watch western tv shows think they are fat and ugly. The girls are starting to develop eating disorders and want to look like the women they see on TV. I will find the link and post it.

I could not find the study I mentioned because I would have to pay $30 for it on Science Direct but this one is simular. Its about body image changes in Austalia due to the influence of western media. It's really long though. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2248/i s_157_40/ai_n13774349
