So I'm going to try to make a pizza tonight (a sorry little one with a tortilla, but a pizza nonetheless!)
Do any of you have any recipes you'd like to share or tips? I've heard of people using barbeque sauce, have any of you tried this? I plan to top it with mushroom slices, tomato bits, and maybe some squash.

I'm working on a sauce, I don't have a recipe yet but I love pizza. I think one ingredient should be Tomato Paste.
I take my tomato paste and dump it into a ziplock bag and flatten it like a pancake and freeze it. (lable it)
When I need paste I take it out and let it thaw a little bit and then I put a 1 tablespoon measuring spoon in the bag and press the tomato paste in the spoon from the outside of the bag and there is no mess. It works and I don't waste any of the paste and it stays fresh.
Some people put a shredded carrot in tomato sauce with diced onions, garlic, oregano and a pinch of basil and let it stew on the stove.
2 tablespoons of Tomato Paste = 30 cal., 6 Carbs, 0 Fat, 2 Protein

I'd be killed by my ancestors if I were to give away the family sauce recipe!
italianprincess,
Your secrets are safe with us! Please give us a hint, Please.
I had one old (81) Italian friend and he said, the secret to his sauce was, cook it with a lamb bone in the pot while the sauce was cooking.

we make our own sauce....from scratch.
We start with a variety of fresh homegrown or organic tomatoes. Chop them up.
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 small onions, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 stalks celery, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 dried bay leaves
1 tablespoon chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves
4 cups fresh tomato puree
1 large fresh basil stem with leaves removed
Pinch sugar, if needed
In a skillet you warm up the EVOO with chopped garlic, onions, and celery. Saute until golden brown. In a large pot add chopped tomatoes, fresh tomato puree, all chopped spices, and sauteed mixture, and bring to a simmer.

Thank You!
you're welcome
I know this might sound really boring, but I just use plain tomato sauce. Very low cal, and after loading your pizza with lots of veges and stuff, you can't really tell the difference.
My fav pizza right now..
Whole Grain Pita, tomato sauce, shredded fat free cheese, chopped mushrooms, green peppers, onions, grilled chicken, and pineapple for a little sweet taste! OH SO GOOD!

Mm so sodium high tho!!
In australia BBQ sauce is used on pizzas liek BBQ chicken and BBQ meat lovers (which is meatballs and onions/peppers/mushrooms and cheese)
I'd say mix a bit of tomato paste with crushed tomatoes for a thick hearty base (no added salt ones) or just use pasta sauce (you can get them in little tubs)
I'm doing some on english muffins soon. One mini hawiaiin (low fat shaved ham, pineapple and pasta sauce, with cheese) and one mini aussie (my own invention, BBQ sauce, beef bits, onion, beetroot and cheese) haha! i want a satay chicken one but the cals are SKY HIGH. Even a low fat recipe I invented, (using low-cal things like splenda and soy) was like 200 cals just for a tiny amount of sauce. If only I had PB2

I just use Contadina Pizza sauce on a toasted 100% Whole Grain pita pocket bread. Top with fresh or canned sauteed mushrooms and onions. Also, DIVINE with some sauteed fresh chopped broccoli and a little bit of chopped avocado. Top that with 1/4 cup Mozzerella cheese and broil til it starts to brown. Can also use whole grain flatbread.
BBQ pizza....bleh. I keep it traditional, but I don't precook the sauce. Just blend and spread on the thinly spread dough, then top with cheeses and a drizzle of olive oil.
SAUCE
Blend the following in a bowl --
1-2 cups plum tomatoes; skinned, crushed with the hands, and extra liquid drained away (use canned if you don't have fresh)
6 leaves of fresh basil, torn or chiffonaded
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp minced or grated onion
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp red wine (I like using chianti)
3 tbsp parmesan cheese
I would preheat the oven for 30 minutes at 500+ degrees. You should have a pizza stone or cast iron skillet inside. Arrange your pizza on a well-floured peel, cookie sheet or cutting board, then give it a good shuffle onto the stone. If you have no stone, just use a cookie sheet. cook 10-15 minutes or until bubbly.

Also I have used a GIANT mushroom cap instead of the base. So I could put on more topping :D:D:D
To cut calories I make a pizza dough divide in 8 pieces I wrap and freeze them.
When I want pizza I take a piece out and defrost and let it rise. Then flour and roll it out in with my pasta machine it makes a very thin crust. I either have a small pizza or make a calzone out of it.
You could just use a rolling pin too.

My god, these all sound amazingggg. I'm thinking I'm going to make a pizza tomorrow! I'm going to use a La Tortilla Factory tortilla, but I'll pile on the toppings to make up for the small crust (LOVE your mushroom cap idea, herring! I need to look for some of those)
Thank you all for your recipes. Feel free to post more. :D

I would like to share my success, if no one minds. :)
1 Tortilla Factory tortilla
1/4 cup tomatoes, canned, onion and herb added
1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp parmesan cheese
Mash this together to get all the tastes together. I added a bit of chopped red pepper and yellow squash because I needed more. Then I got one slice of fat free American cheese and cut it into strips, spreading over evenly. Then I put chopped tomato and (more :D) red pepper.
I just popped this in my toaster oven. It looked really pretty and colorful! I expected a homemade pizza with homemade sauce and a tortilla would taste like crap.. but this. was. amazingggg. Tasted like real pizza! All under 150 cal, too, and it filled me up! :O
