since upping my weights, it's been quite hard to balance my two barbells when I do squats. They are 16.5 lbs/7.5 kgs each. not TOO heavy, but still quite stressful for me, LOL!! Tongue out

I'm just wondering where I should place them...

  • a bit above my shoulder
  • in between my legs (ALERT: awkward position)
  • outside, next to my thighs.

Put your arms by your side for normal squats. If you're doing a sumo squat, one DB would go in the middle.

Do you mean dumbbells? If you are using two barbells, that would be difficult to balance!

Assuming dumbbells, keep them on the outside, next to your thighs. I find that I will move them forward (towards my knees) to help balance, but I try not to - your arms should continue to hang straight down throughout the movement.

Dumbell Squats - Usually done with the dumbells held at outside the legs.

If you hold the dumbells on your shoulders you'll need to keep your torso more vertical to keep balanced (this movement is more similar to a barbell front squat).

You can also look up goblet squats where you hold one dumbell by your chest with both hands.

Yep, floggingsully is correct ... and here's another site that has fantastic mini-videos that show the proper way to do just about any exercise you can think of! http://www.trainwithmeonline.com/exercises.as p

- outside the legs? wow... i tried to do it again with the dumbells (not barbells sorry!) outside of the legs, but it was causing too much strain on my shoulders/back.... i dont know why?? Undecided do you think my feet were too far apart from each other??

- ohhh!! and those goblet squats!! do those pretty much do the same as normal dumbell squats?
