Hey all,
I used to eat Dannon Fit 'n Light Vanilla. But than I met with a nutritionist who said Splenda isn't as safe as everyone says, and is better to just be avoided.
So I switched it out for Plain Nonfat yogurt, and OMG, I need some suggestions to improve the taste. Cause I am having trouble choking this stuff down, even dipping fruit in it.
Anyone got any tips to improve the taste without sabotaging the low sugar content?
Yeah I don't trust that splenda junk either.
I like plain yogurt with frozen orange juice concentrate mixed in (sounds crazy, I know.) there is a delicious interplay of tart and sweet when you do that.
I mix a spoonful or two into a bowl of yogurt. I have no idea how many calories that adds, probably it is still a lot of sugar.
I have also mixed in crushed pineapple (packed in juice of course) and slices of various citrus.
Keep in mind you will also get used to it :)
as for plain low fat yogurt, for some strange reason I LOVE the taste of plain non-fat yogurt (I am strange lol)...but try putting berries or something in it (my favorite in yogurt are blueberries) or some measured out healthier cereal to make it cruncy, which may mask the taste a bit for you.....
As for Splenda, nah, I've never used it. But I guess some people can't have regular sweet stuff like honey or maple syrup? What is the motivation for using Splenda?
Moderation in all things...use a combination of artificial sweetners (Splenda today, Equal tomorrow, etc.) to lower your consumption of any of them and some days, you can use real sugar (just make sure you are using the minimum you need...bet you it will still be lower than pre-sweetened stuff).
Use fruits that are already in their own juice...at my local supermarket, the store brand of jar peaches aren't in syrup and when added to plain yogurt, yum.
Stop thinking of yogurt as something sweet. Use it on top of a Mexican-style egg white omelette. Use it on anything you like to top with sour cream. Mix with salsa to start your day with a bit of kick.
Mix it with your coffee.
Add cocoa powder (although you may run into the same artificial sweetner issue).
I use low plain yogurt for smoothies. Put 1/4 cup each of yogurt, milk and orange juice and 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries. Mmmm.... It is fairly high calorie, but dense and filling with a decent balance of nutrients.
I personally like to add just a TINY bit of vanilla concentrate to the yogurt. This should be great for you, especially if you liked the Danon Lite n Fit vanilla. But the frozen orange juice concentrate is also good. Also, if you're into texture, you can try taking just a few of the Oreo cookies from a 100 Calorie Pack and smashing them before adding them to your yogurt. Low fat/low sugar and surprisingly delicious!
You're not supposed to eat it PLAIN - that's vile unless you're using it as a sour cream substitute. Don't be afraid to sweeten it a little. One LEVEL teaspoon of sugar only has 15 calories, and it's more than enough for 1/2 cup yoghurt. Or you could use honey or maple syrup if you're on a natural food kick. (maple syrup was good but it actually takes MORE than regular sugar so it didn't save any calories.) You could even try using half a teaspoon and see if that's enough to take the sour edge off the yoghurt.
Try adding cinnamon and/or applesauce... or else vanilla.
I prefer plain yogurt to flavored; I actually like the taste of it! Heheh... Greek yogurt too - although that one took me a while to get used to.
I haven't tried it, but yogurt would probably blend unsweetened, too, using chopped tomatoes, cucumber, onions, garlic, crushed chili pepper, etc. Anyone here worked out a recipe?
Mgrondin... why not buy the fruit on the bottom yoghurt? Because that's made with either high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweetener, and a lot of people are trying to avoid them. I like my plain yoghurt mixed with apple sauce, and either cinnamon or vanilla. (and if you mix that with a crunchy cereal it's not half bad either!)
thhq, plain yoghurt mixed with cucumber and garlic is tatziki(sp?) and it's yummy!
I don't eat HFCS or artificial sweeteners either, it is possible to purchase brands that don't use either.
Sorry if I sounded critical, I was just curious as it sounds like that yogurt recipe is not going to be any lower-calorie than regular fruit on the bottom.
the yogurt and cucumber with garlic sounds delicious.
