Plain Yogourt
So I bought a little tub of plain yogourt, since a lot of people say the flavoured ones have a lot of bad sugar. Problem is, I can hardly stomach it. Its so bitter!
What kind of things do you put in your yogourt, if anything. I need some ideas.
-fruit - frozen raspberries/mulberries/blackberries go well because when you mix them their wateryness mixes with the yogurt so the yogurt will get their flavor.
-cinnamon might work, never tried it with just yogurt though
-jam
-honey
-maple syrup, never tried it though
pie filling (no sugar or regular); mix it with your cereal and let the sugar in the cereal soak through; any artificial sweetner...
But I usually just mix mine with either plain fruit, pie filling, or jam/preserves
Bitter doesn't sound right. It should be sour, a lot like sour cream.
The usual sweetener in commercial yogurt is jam, but fruit preserves are better because they're chunky.
A little bit of sweetener (honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, molasses) goes a long way and changes the flavor a lot. For some reason it takes the sourness away.
This may sound a little odd, but yogurt works really well mixed with instant oatmeal. It's like thick pudding.
I use plain yogurt as I would sour cream. If you are used to the very sweet taste of flavored, sugared yogurts, then it will take some getting used to.
If you still don't like it, why not look for the "light" yogurts that are artificially sweetened?
I tend to think of the flavour as pleasantly tart, not bitter. So therefore I just eat it plain or with muesli.
If you are used to sweet yoghurt, then yes it will take time to adjust. However I think that plain yoghurt is how it is supposed to be - sweet flavoured versions aren't really yoghurt, they're more of a yoghurt-based dessert.
I can vouch that maple syrup in plain yogurt is delicious, although I usually use honey, since maple syrup is so expensive.
It's also great in smoothies, and as a substitute for both mayo and sour cream in recipes. You can replace oil in some baked goods (like muffins, pancakes) with yogurt.
It may take a while for you to be as fond of it as flavored yogurt, but as you adjust, you'll likely find that just a little honey makes for very tasty yogurt, especially if you also add fruit or nuts or low-fat granola.
FWIW, I also prefer full-fat plain yogurt if I'm eating it by itself. I find the fat-free versions to be more sour, although I don't notice it if I'm using yogurt as a sour cream/mayo substitute.
I know the feeling you're having!! Within the last 6 months I am finally able to determine the brand I like and what to do with each brand!! Don't give up... what brand did you buy? Nancy's is the one I can't fix it's way too sour for me! .... I LOVE High Mountain though!! I like a couple of the others... but this is the one I can actually enjoy plain if I need to.
I put cinnamon in my yogurt EVER TIME! I love it, plus they say it's an antioxidant. My flavor of choice is the sweetener that comes from the cactus... Blue agave or agave necter. It's said to be low glycemic and it's tastes great for a small amount of calories. Plus a little goes a long way! The other addition that I totally love is frozen cherries. I put them in frozen, it keeps cold on my way to work, and when I'm ready to eat it... the cherries are melted and their juice has sweetened my yogurt also!!
Don't give up... you will find a way that you LOVE plain yogurt!!!! And congrats for the switch! Try a different brand and see if you can find the small containers versus the big one's until you find a brand you like.
