I have always enjoyed eating yogurt.  For a while now, I've been eating fat free, custard style yogurt, sweetened with fructose and aspartame.  However, after reading the info that's out there about aspartame, I've decided to cut back on it.  Plus, I've read that plain yogurt is better for you, and I know that I can always mix some fruit in with it, and that way I have control over what I'm eating.

Only one problem, I don't like plain yogurt!

I just had fat free plain yogurt for lunch today, and mixed in some mandarin orange segments and a small drizzle of honey to sweeten it up a little.  It wasn't terrible, but I didn't like it enough to want to eat it very much.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for stuff to mix into the yogurt to make it taste a little better?  It's mainly that "sour" taste that I don't like - texture, scent, etc. doesn't bother me.  I have some pineapple, so I'll try that next.  But beyond that, I'm lost.  Are there any preferences as to brands?  What I ate today was a cheap store brand, are the name brands better?

Thanks! :)

I do not like yogurt much either, I mix kellogs smart start into mine...I like having something crunchy in mine. Any cereal or granola would work though...

The tang bit sounds like it's more natural. You should try a different brand. Some are fairly bland.  I love the tang but most North Americans seem to like less tangy.

Plain 'greek' style can be really nice. I like the 'FAGE' brand.
I add a little bit of vanilla extract...just a little.  Or almond extract might work.
i like plain yogurt - my fave is stonyfield farms organic.  make your own combinations by a teaspoon or 2 of your favorite jam, or your favorite honey.
What if you put it in the blender with fruit? It would be kind of like a smoothie, I suppose, but it would spread the fruit juices throughout the yogurt and might make it more palatable.
Be careful with the vanilla extract, it has a high alcohol content.
Although vanilla extract has a high percentage of alcohol, you only use a small amount.

1/4 teaspoon of alcohol will not be a problem for most people.
i have put fruit jelly jam in mine (homemade raspberry is the BEST!!) also, if you have calories to spare huckleberry syrup is good too.
How about adding Stevia--the all natural, zero calorie sweetener that, unlike Splenda, is all natural and not processed?  Nutritionists  recommend it.  I like the SweetLeaf Stevia Plus brand, in the green envelope.
I find that you get used to that taste -- kind of ACQUIRE a taste for it. You could try Grape Nuts cereal -- I know it's divine on icecream ... I use fat free plain (cheap brand) in smoothies -- they're just divine!
I add some Kellog's Special K.  Love the crunch and it helps the taste.
Thank you everyone for all of the great suggestions!  I will definitely be giving them all a try, plus I think I'm going to try different brands of yogurt as well.  You all are the best! :)
This is going to sound weird, but I love plain yogurt with Maple Syrup. I use the Lite kind so it's not so high in calories.
librarygirl, I love Fage yogurt http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/item/10 8278.html

I use it to add creamyness to curry and other spicy dishes, and also instead of sour cream on chili etc.

It has such a mild taste and creamy texture, unlike anything else.
Stonyfield Farms Organic is the best. Good luck!
I love vanilla Non-fat w/ Grape Nuts. Dannon is really good.
For me: Stonyfield fat free plain mixed with blueberries (frozen, thawed in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds to create some juice) and Special K protein plus.

Also, I encourage your decision to avoid the artificial sweeteners. Diminishing the need for sugar and overly-sweetened flavors can only help you in the long run.
maybe add some cereal...? special k or something
