did "plan b" work?
okay, so i had a mishap last sunday evening with a broken condom. monday morning the boy and i went to a walk-in clinic to see a doctor, who prescribed me "plan b", aka "the morning after pill". the doctor said that it might mess up my periods, and if i hadn't gotten my period in 3 weeks i should go back for a pregnancy test.
WELL less than a week later (this morning - saturday), i have my period.. even though i just had it less than 2 weeks ago. i'm probably just being over-paranoid for asking, but that means it worked, and i'm not pregnant.. right?
It's extremely unlikely that you are pregnant but there are people that have period-like bleeding all the way through pregnancy...
Do yourself a huge favour and get more clued up on reproduction, contraception and all that it entails. Having children is a serious, life-changing commitment and, when it comes to sex, ignorance is not bliss.
Saying that, Jane, she did go straight for the MA pill the next morning. I know people who've waved it off or pushed it to 48 hours~ before going. And a broken condom can happen to anyone, no matter how old.
This is one that you might want to play "better safe than sorry" on, Erica. If you're still anxious - even though your period being a good indicator of it being unlikely - take a test.
Hey eerica, I can speak from personal experience. I too had to take one the morning after once as the condom also split but we didn't notice until afterwards...
Anyway I experienced a bit of bleeding afterwards but it wasn't actually my period. I think this is just a possible side effect, as there is a huge dosage of hormones in that little pill. If your periods are normally fairly regular, I'd wait and see if it comes when it is due. And get yourself down to your GP who will give you a free pregnancy test. Better to know now than wait till it's too late. Also, maybe consider going on the Pill- it'll give you a good peace of mind in case this ever happens again.
I'm a health educator and happen to know a bit about how Plan B works... Plan B can cause you to have an early period, which, in your case, it sounds like it did. This is a pretty foolproof sign that you're not pregnant, but you can take a test to be absolutely certain.
You may want to consider an alternate form of birth control for the future. There are many very reliable choices (the pill, the patch, nuva-ring...) and you can still use the condoms to protect you from STD's and HIV. If you can't afford it, there is a program through medicaid which pays for "family planning expenses" including contraception.
Hope that helps! :)
the doctor gave me a prescription for birth control pills, and i'm picking it up monday. i'm not supposed to start it until the sunday or monday after my period though.. and once i get the pill, i'm still going to be using a condom as well (just so you know).
1) You don't have to wait for the Sunday after your period to start a pack of pills. You can do a "same-day" start on Monday if you like. Just be sure to use back-up protection the first month (which it sounds like you are doing).
2) If using condoms was working for you (besides this episode) don't feel like you HAVE to be on the pill. I've been using condoms as birth control for 5 years (along with some fertility awareness)without a broken condom or issue. I think it can be a very viable form of contraception, if used properly. I think the US medical system makes hormonal methods seem like the only choice at times. However, if the pill seems like a great method for you, it is very effective.
