Will This Plateau Never End?!
So, I'm 20, 5'5" and I've been stuck at 130lbs for longer than I care to remember. That's down from 170lbs (back in highschool), and my goal is around 120.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong! The scale literally hasn't budged in over a year (aside for a brief time when I weighed closer to 127, then popped back up again, and Christmas when I gained a few). I eat about 1400 calories a day, I've reduced my portion sizes, cut out pretty much all junkfood, and said goodbye to fastfood completely. I get my fruits and veggies, drink water, and eat high-fiber cereal for breakfast. I get in at least a 30-45min walk/hike a day (double that on weekends), but lately I've been hiking and cycling a lot more.
I'm getting desperate, partially due to being completely fed up, but mostly because I'm leaving home for months and months come fall. I'm going to be sharing a small, one bath, two bedroom house/apartment with ten other people, and will probably have to get changed in a room full of girls every day. I'll also need an entirely new wardrobe, and would hate to have to buy even more clothing if I loose weight when I get there and need stuff that fits properly.
I know that I won't be able to reach my goal by the time I leave, but I'd like to at least get started. Oh wise CCers, what can I do to beat this plateau?
As you know, you are technically at a healthy weight right now. That is no doubt why you are having trouble losing any more weight. Have you considered just going on a maintenance program for 130? Up your calories, keep your exercise the same, or even add in some strength training if you want to look more toned. Get good at maintaining your current weight, buy the clothes that make you look fabulous right now, go on your trip, enjoy your youth. When you get back, if you still want to get to a lower weight you can drop your calories about 500 a day and slim down a little more.
I think that's excellent advice.
Thank you for your advice =)
I know that at this point, this is really all about vanity. My goal is more of a guess than anything - I'm going more by eye than anything, and will probably stop loosing weight before I hit 120.
I dunno, I guess I just look at breaking my plateau as something positive and confidence-boosting for me to focus on in the midst of what will be a very stressful and possibly traumatic change. It'd just be one less thing for me to worry about.
Do you think that I could be maintaining right now? The last time I upped my calories (around Christmas) I started gaining again really quickly.
Use the tools to figure out how many calories you need to maintain. You certainly should be able to eat more than 1400 calories and maintain, my guess would be at least 1800. Of course, that means that you really need to track what you are eating (weigh the portions if possible) and be really scrupulous to make sure that you continue to eat good, nutritious foods. You might have a small, temporary gain, but you should settle out at about 130. Good luck!
