Plea from a rescue pup-
I was born in the summer a few years ago;
Quite why I was born I never will know.
Some folks owned my mother; decided to breed ...
No reason I know of except for their greed.
I know I was hungry, I know I was cold
And they sold me quite early,at just five weeks old.
Owners number one seemed friendly at first
And life was quite good, until my bubble burst.
They started to argue;their marriage split up
And in went the ad, for sale 4 month pup.
Some more folks arrived, the next ones in line ...
They treated me kindly, and life was just fine.
But the master dropped dead, and she couldn't cope
So they sold me again as I began to lose hope.
I now had a new home up in the sky ...
We went up the lift, fourteen floors high.
The new folks were kind, but they left me all day.
I was busting to pee, and had no where to play.
It was boredom, I think, when I chewed up that chair.
They agreed I should go, but it just wasn't fair.
The next home was good and I thought this was it ...
They started to show, and I won ... well ... a bit.
Then somebody told them that I had "no bone,"
And in went the ad, for sale to good home.
The next lot were dreadful... they wanted a guard,
But I didn't know that ... although I tried hard.
One night they got burgled and I didn't bark,
Tied up in that shed, alone in the dark.
For four months I lay in that cold dark shed
With only an old paper sack for a bed,
A small dish of water all slimy and green ...
The state I was in, well, it had to be seen.
I longed for some help, for an end to the pain.
Then some new people came, and I went off again.
So now I'm with Rescue, and this home is good!
There are walks in the country and lots of good food...
There are kisses and cuddles to greet me each day
And I dread the time that they send me away.
But for now here I stand, skin and bone, on all fours...
Please don't let this happen to any of yours!

I hate sad puppy things!! Everyone should adopt their puppies and kittens!
I would be far more likely to sell/give away free my teenagers to a "good home" than my dog!! I am his bff until the day he dies!! :)
i got my dog when he was an insane adolescent mutt from the pound. he's been a handful, but i love him more than anything.
i will never, as long as i live, purchase a dog. anyone who does purchase a pet dog, is horribly selfish IMO.
and once you have a pet, move heaven and earth to keep it. you are all it knows.
Why do you have to go and make me cry over sad puppy stories??? HUH?
Now I feel like I need to run home and hug my dog!
I LOVE YOU CADIE!!!!
I love my rescue pup!
I'm with jules... never buy a dog. Adopt.
I am sobbing at work.
And your puppy is beautiful.
your puppy IS beautiful veevee!
i would love my next dog to be a rescue border collie or border mix, as long as i'm able to devote the time to training and working him! i'm dying to get into agility. i went and watched some live agility trials a few months ago, and it made me so happy to watch i almost cried, i'm such a dork!
Well, my last 4 dogs (including my new puppy) were purchased.
- The first two were unknowingly puppy mills; one was purchased for me as a gift by my son from a friend and one I thought I had found a reputable breeder only to find out otherwise with a lot of heartbreak.
- My two herding dogs were purchased from farms and from responsible breeding programs.
- I would have adopted had I been able to.
- I don't know how it is other places, but when trying to adopt from a breed rescue it was harder to do than adopt a human baby. This was not only my experience, but several others I know. Not to mention that it would have cost more than purchasing the two babies put together.
- When I was a kid and we needed a herding dog, we found a farmer who had a pup and they gave it to us. We never bought dogs and we always had the best.
- I sure hope they change the laws so these puppy mills are done away with permanently.
- There have been several puppy mill raids here in Washington State in the past several weeks. That is what brought this poem up, it was posted on Craig's list and I had to share.
so you purchase your dogs because you actually need them to work on your farm herding right? because then i could understand you purchasing a dog.
but then i can't understand why a rescue would not approve you to adopt one of their dogs if you have a farm and actually work them!
i mean i know if i was set on a certain breed, but the rescue told me i was unfit according to their standards, i'd believe them because they want the best for their dogs. then i'd choose another breed or try another rescue.
what makes me ill is people who selfishly get set on one breed of dog, for no reason other than that they like it, and then purchase dogs of that breed instead of going to the pound or a shelter and finding a different type of dog that really needs a home.
it just disgusts me.
Actually, no, this time I don't need a dog for herding, but I am one of those idoits you mentioned that was not willing to settle for another breed.
i never called anyone an idiot. i just find this post a bit ironic now is all.
Agreed. Why would you make a thread about a "plea from a rescue pup" when you just admitted you bought from puppy mills and unfit breeders because a rescue wouldn't give you the breed of your choice.
That's not what I said. I said that the dogs purchased from the puppy mills were unknowingly done. The two I have now were from farmers doing responsibile breeding. If you had seen the dogs collected from the recent local puppy mill raids you would know why I poste this.
there was a puppy mill raided near charlotte nc last week or the week before...
so sad

Here are just a few links to check out. It was worse on TV
i'm sorry to tell you, but unless those "farmers" are breeding show quality, health tested, registered dogs, or even at least just breeding from a strong line of working dogs and selling them ONLY to people who will use them for their intended purpose, they are just like puppy mills, just without the neglect and cruelty.
their effect on dogs in shelters and rescues is NO different from that of a big huge puppy mill.
a real good breeder would have higher standards than a rescue when it came time to place their puppies. they wouldn't just sell them to nice people with money looking for a pet.
and i want to add veevee, i'm really not trying to attack you here. i'm sure you love dogs and mean well.
it just irks me that so many people say how wonderful rescue and adoption is, and how awful puppy mills are, but then just HAVE to have a certain type of dog so they go out and buy it. doesn't matter where it is bought from. it's the "i want THAT kind, so i'm getting it" mentality that keeps BYB's, pet stores and puppy mills in business.
if nobody bought dogs, except for those who absolutely needed to, then there would be no money to be made in puppy mills and the awful things in those links would never have to happen.
I'm confused as to how purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder with registered, health-tested dogs (who contractually obligates his/her clients to have their dogs fixed) contributes to puppy mills.
Not everyone who buys dogs is contributing to the problem. Just those who buy dogs irresponsibly.
