PLEASE Help me find SPIN SHOES!!

Quote  |  Reply

I was told to go on Ebay to find SPD shoes. I can't seem to find any in my size or there aren't many womens. Anyone know where to find them cheaper than buying them in a retail store and are Shimanos the best? Thanks.

SPD refers to the bolt pattern on the shoes that is compatible with certain type of clip in system. The system is used by the Montain Bike shoes.  Maybe you weren't searching for the correct thing?

Different manufacturers size, and cut their shoes slightly different so it might be a good idea to stop by a bike shop and try a few different brands/sizes. The major manufacturers are Shimano, Specialized, and Sidi. They are all produce quality products.

Maybe not but this girl in my Spin class said she got her off of Ebay by searching for "spd shoes". I did find some but not that many. You are right though I need to go and try on some first. I just do not want to spend that much money if there is a way that I can get them much cheaper.

You will definitely get a better workout using the spin shoes.  The first few times I used them, I hated it, because it seemed harder, but you'll get used to it quickly.  It just engages your muscles differently and helps you in pulling up without having as much strain on your foot.

I recommend that you go to a bike shop or somewhere like REI and try on some different types of shoes so you'll know what size you wear, and then consider ordering them from ebay or wherever.  I cycle outdoors as well as take spin classes, and I have a pair of 'spin shoes' made by Nike that were not too expensive, bought at a local bike shop.  Several women in my classes have the same shoe.  A good place to buy all sorts of bike gear at pretty low prices is performance bike.  They may have stores in your area or you can order online:  www.performancebike.com.  You can buy pretty inexpensive cycling shorts there, too, $20 for the house brand compared to $50 and up for national brands.

You can also do a search on google for 'spin shoes' and you will get tons of hits.  When you buy your shoes, you will also want to check the bottom of the shoes because most cycling and spin shoes do not come with cleats/clips already affixed to the bottom of the shoe - at least mine didn't.  You go to a bike store with your shoes and tell them you want them to put bolts (I call them cleats, don't know what the 'technical' term is) on your shoes for spin class.  The spin bikes at our gym accomodate two types of  cleats which are extremely common (SPD and another kind I forget).   The main difference that I can see between the spin shoes and the road shoes is that the spin shoe is softer, more like an athletic shoe, and the road shoe is very stiff, which I prefer.  Also, on a spin shoe, the cleat is set into the sole of the shoe so you can walk around in the gym without scratching the floor.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the cost of the cleats is very minimal ($5-10) and your bike shop should put them on your shoes for free.  : )

Good luck and have fun!

As I mentioned SPD and SPD-SL refers to clip in systems. SPD-SL is used for roadbike shoes and has a different bolt pattern then SPD system. The SPD system is used for Mountain bike shoes or "spin shoes". These type of shoes have softer, and more flexible soles. When going to a bike shop ask for Mountain bike shoes or shoes that are for SPD clip in system, as the employee might not know what you are talking about when you say "spin shoes".

On a side note I think it's not really honest to go to a shop use employee time, try their stock and then go buy online once you know which shoes fit. Just saying...
