Please Recommend your Meal Replacement Bars

Quote  |  Reply

I am looking for suggestions of Meal Replacement Bars that are not totally unhealthy- I take a class Monday nights right after work so I have no time for dinner, and by the time i get home it is too late for dinner. I was thinking of the Slim Fast Optima Meal Bars but I am not sure if there are other healthier options out there. This meal bar has 220 cals and 6 g of fat, 8 g protein and 3g fiber.

thanks!

They aren't really meal replacement bars per say, but I recommend the Odwalla bars. Pair that with a piece of fruit and you're good to go. If there's anyway you could eat dinner though, I would encourage you to do so.

How bout 2 hard boiled eggs and a bag of baby carrots?

I can't recommend a meal replacement bar because honestly those things have never filled me up. Food fills me up.

I would also reccoment the Odwalla bars.

The super-protein, peanut peanut-butter, and berries go-mega ones are the best for replacing meals.

Nutrilite has tons of amazing flavors: blueberry, apple cobbler, rice krispes, and SO many more. they have 15 protein, about 3 fat each, and 6 fiber all for 160-180 calories. they also have snackbars, protein snack bars, protein shakes... AND pre work out bars that are too die for, peanut butter pretzle... mmmm :D

I second this. Another option is to make savory oatmeal, and bring it with you in a tapowear. You could also make and bring with you sandwiches. I make mine with nice vegie burger patties. The sauce is Greek yogurt with Dijorn mustard.

I love CLIF bars (about 250 cal, 11 grams protein each, high in sugar but mostly natural from pureed dates and stuff. the chocolate peanut chip and almond fudge are superrrb)

Luna bars are good (180 cal, 10 grams protein average) but a little low for a meal. I'll often bring one and some dried fruit or raw veggies to school for lunch.

I find the Slimfast/Atkins/other "diet" bars have waayyy too many artificial sweeteners and unnatural ingredients for my liking.

x3, real food is always the wayt to go.

If you really need a bar, make your own (and make it out of real food).  Dr. John Berardi offered the following recipe a couple months ago on t-nation:

Ingredients

3/4 cup pecan meal

3/4 cup almond meal

1/4 cup walnut pieces

2 whole omega-3 eggs plus 2 whites, beaten

6 scoops vanilla Metabolic Drive (Sully's edit: use any vanilla protain powder)

1/4 teaspoon salt

Splenda, to taste (optional)

Instructions

To make the pecan and almond meal, process the nuts in a blender. Mix everything together in a large bowl, and continue stirring until all of the ingredients have mixed together thoroughly. Spread the dough into an 8X8-inch baking dish coated with olive oil cooking spray, and bake for 15 minutes at 350-degrees F.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Difficulty Level: Easy

Servings: 6

Nutrition: Calories: 379

Protein: 32 grams

Carbs: 9 grams

Fat: 26 grams

Fiber: 4 grams

Sugar: 2 grams

While I would agree that Atkins bars have a lot of crap in them, I eat them anyway. I have yet to find another bar that is low enough in sugar (can't have it).

I like the Atkins Chocolate Chip Granola Bars. They are very filling. They have 200 calories, 17 grams of protien, 1 gram of sugar and 6 grams of fiber. They also have a TON of vitamins in them. I eat them for breakfast when I have to get out the door in a hurry. The CC does grade them as a A.

mmmm..... those sound really good. I think I'll give them a try.

have you ever made them before??

I'm a huge fan of the south beach meal replacement bars.  Absolutely delicious and 210 calories, 20g of protein, 5g fiber, 6g fat.  Good luck!

clif bar and a small piece of fruit is a healthier alternative to some of the "meal" bars- much more natural and satisfying IMO.

I like the "Think Thin" bars. They have 20g protein, no sugar and are gluten free for about 200 calories (can't remember exactly how many). They come in flavors like peanut butter, chocolate, brownie and white chocolate chip. Here's the link if you're interested.

Kashi GoLean Rolls are great! I like the chocolate peanut, it's 190 calories and has 5 grams of fat, 6 grams of fiber and 12 grams of protein in one bar.

I adore the Luna peppermint stick bars.  Again, pair them with a piece of fruit or a bag of veggies and you'll be in better shape.  They're really very light for a meal, more like a snack and then you eat another snack later.

I like Myoplex and Clif bars, though they tend to be more expensive.

Powerbars and slimfast bars taste nasty.  Slimfast milk chocolate shakes are good, and I found them more filling than the bars anyway.

If you're not lazy like me, the snacks the others are recommending are a less sugary option.
