Poaching Egg Whites?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi all..

I would like to have poached egg whites. I buy the egg beaters (whites only) and would like to know if anyone has tried to poach this?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I much prefer to poach whole eggs.... They hold together beautifully and nothing beats that delicious runny yolk!!  If you want to poach beaten eggs you need to cook them in something or you'll end up with a mess.  Try getting hold of an egg-poaching pan with cups set over a base.  Grease one of the cups, fill with your beaten eggs and poach over the boiling water.

I only take egg whites.

Hard Boiled/ Scramble/ Fried(Olive Oil/Non oil-non stick pan) or Soup

Only 15 calories /egg (without yolk) and high in protein! YUM YUM!

I can take up to 6 egg whites a day yet only 90 calories!

What do you do with all the yolks?

LOL! well, either i throw it away or i fried it and let those of my frens that love egg yolk to eat it.  Of course can't let them have too much egg yolks.. high cholestrol.. LOL!

Seriously, i love to eat eggs, once a while i will add 1/2 egg yolk to 4 egg whites as part of my meal.. :) seriously, everyone should try egg white diet, tasty and healthy and filling.. :)

I eat about 6 eggs (decent free range ones, mind you) a week and my cholesterol levels are fantastic.  Isn't egg white a bit tasteless by itself?

Darlin, i take 6 eggs a day, not a week. If i take 6 whole eggs every day, I think I will be in hospital by now.  And one egg white less than 15 calories while one full egg nearly 100 calories.  LOL! I know egg white abit tasteless, that's why you need to add some light soya sauce, pepper etc.  There are many ways of cooking egg white.

I usually eat my egg whites with low fat salsa, soy cheese or veggies. Hot chilies are good too!

Removing the yolk knocks off a lot of calories and I'm always struggling to add more protein without going over in my cals and fat. This way I can enjoy eggs more frequently. BTW, my dog loves the yolks (good for his fur) so occasionally I share.

Thanks for the responses!!

No problem Stumbles.  You just pop out the right topic here cause I am EGG LOVER!  Haha! I can be vegetarian, but I can't live without eggs.. yum yum!  Haha! My housemate always curse me when i throw away all the egg yolks.  When i cook the egg yolk for him, he asked me whether I have the intention to kill him with all the coles. LOL!

So everyone here into weight lost and body building? I learned from body builders to take egg white for protein and they can take up more than 10 eggs a day. :)

what about you? What's your story?

very mild tasting... but i love it

they taste very 'clean' an natural not overpowering or artificial, but are even more delicious with salsa!

i don't like the taste of yolk by itself (scrambled eggs are okay) but hard boiled or runny yolks taste chalky and dirty to me.

i dunno maybe it is an acquired taste... but i crave egg whites.. i will buy those boxes of just the whites and eat an entire 500ml package as a meal! (but usually i split it in half; ie 1 cup (250ml) for one meal, and the rest for the next day) it makes a lot!

oh and to answer your initial question;

i don't know how to exactly 'poach' the eggs, but microwaving them produces similar results:

just put the whites in a bowl, cover with a paper towel (because they sometimes 'pop') and throw them in the microwave on med/high heat and cook for about a min or so until firm

I'm not exactly sure what a poached egg is... I could've sworn it was close to sunny side up... haha. There goes my logic...

Anyway, i don't think the yolk is all about cutting out fat, etc.  I simply don't like the yolk, unless its scrambled up in an omlette w/ cheese, and then its a wee bit greasy. (and by wee bit I mean mega).  I like hard boiled eggs. I take out the yolk, add salt to the white, and down she goes!

I have recently been taken in by the new show  Biggest Loosers!! very impressed, especially by the Lady trainer..

I was on the treadmill getting ready to quit before running my mile last week and all of a sudden I imagined that lady standing there yelling me " YES YOU CAN DO IT"  HEE HEE I not only finished my mile but also jumped onto the stair master and worked out for 30 more min. Then off to the free weights.

( this has not become my daily work out - I do take time off , I listen to my body)

About 7 days ago  Biggest Loosers motivated me to start counting calories and  I joined  the local gym. I decided all I needed was 1200 calories - I walk 1 mile in the mornings with the dog and then again after the gym 1.5 miles by myself. Trying to keep motivated and busy so that I do not get hungry ( will eat little bits of food all day long , two pretzels, an apple, few peanuts- like a half banana prior to going to the gym gets me by - to take the edge off. I chew orange gum while doing cardo too) I keep a little post it note with a daily accounting of my calories then throw it away at the end of the day with a pat on my back for keeping to the Program..

Anyhow I have lost from 193lbs and weighted in today at 184lbs= 9 pounds

with egg whites counting only 17 calories...I like poaching one egg along with three or four egg whites. I drain the water and eat this with on slice of wheat bread... I only use I can't believe its not butter spray now. Even my daughter's skinny boyfriend will only use this cause it tastes so good. AND NO CALORIES

But most mornings I start with one orange sliced up with one slice of wheat protein bread. The orange seems to jump start the digestive track - its amazing

Lunch I will have a slice of protein bread with a little mayo and either sliced meat or tomato

I have found turkey meatballs at Aldi gro store, I hate turkey but these are delicous. I heat one serving and cut them into bite size pieces and will add to either my salad or wheat pasta  or to my italian sauce for spaghitti etc.

Also I am now buying turkey ground beef. My daughter loves when I cook this ground turkey ( 1 LB serves and add taco seasoning to it ( a half a package does the trick). The calories are so cheap and we can add to the lettus the taco mix, sour cream, cheese and salsa and keep our calories below what we had left to spend!! ( we split the one pound taco mix between the two of us so good and filling)

My daughter's favorite is my stir fry onions, green peppers with broccoli and fresh garlic. top this on your favorte wheat pasta or steamed wheat rice - yes I use olive oil to stir fry veggies ( lite on the salt though)

Good Luck...all

throw the yellow away

It is so easy to poach an egg. Take a small pan add water, heat it to a boiling point slowly add your egg and then add the egg whites

let the water continue to heat up in a bit there will appear a white foam by then you can make sure the egg is done. Skim off the foam and use a strainer spoon to lift your egg out of the water . or tip the pan to drain

They are so delicious  one egg is 70 cal and the whites are only 17

if you do not like the yolk leave it out, The whites are plumpy and good

Good luck

There are so many beneficial nutrients in egg yolks, it seems a huge waste to miss out on them. The cholesterol from 2 egg yolks per day won't affect your cholesterol levels... it's high levels of saturated fat that raise blood cholesterol levels, not dietary cholesterol.

If I am making big omelettes or a lot of scrambled eggs, I will sometimes use half whole eggs/half whites to lower the calories.

With that said, I do often save the eggs to make creme caramels, home-made ice-cream and other treats - delicious.

To make (whole) poached eggs I crack the egg into a cup (makes them easier to tip into the saucepan). Then I bring a large saucepan of water to the boil, and add some salt and vinegar or lemon juice - this helps the protein in the egg to coagulate. Then swirl the water in the saucepan to create a whirlpool, and drop the egg into the centre of the whirlpool - this also helps the egg to keep its shape. Then I turn the temperature down and leave it to poach for about 3 minutes, or until the white is cooked but the yolk is runny on the inside. Then I just fish it out with a slotted spoon and enjoy it on a piece of buttered toast - delicious!

I am assuming you could do the same with an egg white, rather than a whole egg, but I have to say I think you're missing out on the lovely flavour, colour and nutrients held within the yolk sac.
