Pocket Snacks?!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

So I'm a med student, which means long days around the hospital, sometimes without any breaks to eat meals.  I need ideas for snacks  that won't go bad and aren't too bulky to keep in my white coat pockets.  All I can think of are granola bras and clif bars.  If I'm really lucky i can bring an apple and get back to my bag sometime during the day to eat it. (Also, I don't need low sodium snacks, my blood pressure is low, and adding extra sodium in my diet keeps me from fainting after standing all day and all the blood pooling in my legs!)

Any thoughts for super portable snacks?

Thanks!

Personally, I'd hate to be treated by a doctor that was hallucinating because of lack of food....  How do more experienced colleagues manage?   Low blood sugars will make you faint just as fast as low blood-pressure, but then you know that.

Nuts and raisins!!!!  Trail mix if you prefer.   High calorie, small-size, plenty of sugar in the dried fruit.  Chocolate/yoghurt coated raisins are lovely.   If the nuts are salted that will help the sodium.   Pack your pockets out.  Enjoy

I think that nuts and dried fruit of any kind would be your best option and if you need some more sodium, i'd go for salted nuts in that case.  You could also go for prezels (I don't think I spelled that correctly) or wheat thins since they take up minimal space.

hey, similar situation so my suggestions for perfect white-coat pocket fits:

-bars (but not just simple granola-try LUNA, LARA, and ZONE bars--all are loaded with natural goodies and protein to keep you full longer)

-dried fruit (raisins, apricots, dates, prunes, mangoes...)

-almonds, probably one the easiest ones cuz theyre sooo small and portable in a small ziploc

-fruit leathers (like a fruit rollup but healthier)

-small veggies like babycarrots, sugar snaps, snow peas, etc.

-cheese stick

hope these help (ive been known to shove mini bagels with peanut butter on them in the pocket too. sometimes people are like wtf...but hey its better then starving and then gorging on 3 slices of dominos in the back around 2 am

Some of these have already been suggested, so sorry for the repetition

*Dried fruits

*Trail mixes

*Nuts

*Pretzel sticks

*The cheese snacks by Weight Watches and Live Active, or a Laughing Cow babybel

*Triscuits and other wheat crackers

*Fruit leathers

*Panda licorice chews http://www.internaturalfoods.com/panda/panda. html

*Bars

*Soy crisps

*Cereal

*Tubes of yogurt

*Those apple slices that you can buy at the grocery store (usually come with caramel dip) or just slice your own apples and use lemon juice to keep them from browning

*Baby carrots

*Edamame

Yep. I'm stumped now... Well, I hope those get you off to a start at least. Happy snacking!

Thanks everyone!  My options are restricted a bit since I can't have soy or dairy (Luna Bars have a ton of soy, for example), and I'm not sure how I feel about carrying veggies around for 12 hours in my pocket, but some of your suggestions are great!  I don't know why I didn't think of fruit leathers - I have them at home all the time! I grew up on them!  And trail mix/nuts would be good too.  I'm just getting so sick of my granola bars and pretzels all day.

Jane - unfortunately, the higher up on the totem pole you are, the less you need to worry about finding food for yourself.  Us underlings get to scut around and never have a break for lunch.  Or, people eat really poorly, like Sealion said - pizza is ordered, or they eat bad things on the run... not to mention just forging for saltines at the nurses station.  If you are lucky you are on a service that orders food - some departments even have breakfast and lunch every day at meetings.  Others, like surgeons, pretend they never need to eat, drink, or pee, and therefore no one else has to either!

"Hey Napoleon...gimme some of your tots!"  LOL...this post made me think of tater tots in pockets ;)

But clif bars, trail mixes, and dried fruits (pretty much like everyone else mentioned) are my vices.
