Maintaining
Moderators: iae

I've been maintaining with no problems for almost 6 months now. I stayed within 2 pounds or so of my goal weight (I weigh myself every Saturday). Then this last month or so I suddenly started to gain.

To be fair, the number isn't what bothers me, it's the fact that I've gone up a size and now none of my new clothes fit! WTF!!!!

My thighs, which have always been the source of aggravation due to their size (I'm a pear shape) have gone from looking really nice to being so big I can no longer wear half of my new clothes.

The only thing I can think of is that I added a new routine to my workouts, but it focuses on the butt, and was making my legs look great in the beginning.

I went back to my weight loss calories to try to even everything out, and I was dropping a little (.3 - .5 lbs) a week. Today I get on the scale, after being really good all week, and I'm up again. Granted, the weight gained isn't significant, but I'm so short (4' 10") that even a little bit dramatically changes my shape.

What's happening and what can I do to stop this? I leave for Aruba in two weeks, and while I'm not expecting miracles, I'd like to fix what ever is causing this.

Here are some of my thoughts for what they are worth:

  1. Is the weight gain in your eyes only?  Most of us are our own worse critics!
  2. Maybe your exercise routines have stagnated?  Can you include some definitely new but just as effective ways to burn calories?
  3. Are you eating a good protein breakfast and drinking a large glass of water to start the day?
  4. Have you tried eating a healthy protein meal within 30-40 minutes after a hard exercise workout?
  5. Are your thighs bigger because they are muscular?  If so, quit doing whatever is causing that, but do some good cardio to replace that exercise.  Generally, though, for most females, muscle tone is NOT the same thing as muscle bulk, so I doubt that is the problem.
  6. Normally, when one gains fat, it is not just in one area.  A good proof of that is one of my main goals was to lose some of my belly pouch.  But in order to do that, I lost weight all over my body and my belly still is not as small as I had hoped, but it is OK.  So I don't really see how just your thighs got bigger.
  7. Is it possible that the increase in the thighs is just water retention?

Here are some suggestions that are just my opinions.  There are a lot of smart gals in this group who can give you better advice:

  1. Jump rope
  2. Do interval workouts (slow-fast--moderate-fast-slow fast, for example) in things like rope-jumping, elliptical, treadmill walk/run, stationary bike, running, walking, whatever for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Change your workout schedule--make it creative and fun!

Well, I just wanted to reply to help keep your post up toward the top.  Best of luck in accomplishing your goal and have the greatest time ever on your vacation.  I am positive that you will find out your thighs are fine and will look good on the beach.
