Poetry Challenge - can you make a haiku poem?

Quote  |  Reply

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that is easy to make.  Things don't have to rhyme, but instead rely on specific syllable patterns.  Are there any budding poets out there?  Why don't you share your diet/exercise/lifestyle jouney with others through haiku poetry.

The syllable pattern goes like this 5 - 7 - 5 for classic poems.  Haiku in languages other than Japanese often just goes for three short lines expressing something.  Often, Japanese will choose a theme and write poetry. One of the things which create interest in the poem is a contrast in ideas in such a few words.  There is also often an explanation of the background that led to a poem's being forming.

Example:  poem in 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable rhythm followed by background information

    peanut butter jar

    calories much too high, but

    ahh, satisfaction

I was hungry and had just spent an hour jogging, so I wanted to eat something with protein.  The problem was as pay day appoaches, there is little to eat in the house except peanut butter.  It's a high calorie food that is pretty satisfying, and hey I ran, so why not indulge?

i am gaining weight
while reducing calories

Ouch! My muscles hurt

vanity is such hard work

But HEY! Lookinnn goooood!!!

Really hittin the weight training hard, and slogging my guts out on the eliptical trainer. Its my vain attempt to hold back the years and hang on to whats left to my imaginary youth. Like a typical bloke I see the improvements in the mirror, but when I look again they seem to dissappear! Thankfully my male vanity kicks in and rescues me!

Punching...fast...rythmic

speedbag rocks - shoulders burning

kickbag waits its turn

I spend a lot of time on the elliptical too redcol, I like it, I know it's effective but man, when I do my kung-fu work outs and just poundon the kickbag I have in my garage- woot! that's the stuff!  I like the speedbag too as it gives my shoulders killer definition!

run for a meeting

  working that lunch menu off

     yet to face dinner

I have a lunch meeting with a banquet meal today.  It's not a run day, but I need to get quick exercise, and for the calories burned, running is quickest for me.  Then, I have a bad schedule for dinner time.  If I don't plan well my food goals will be crashed by late night eating.

Sunrise... Gratitude

A new opportunity

to learn, love and grow

I've made a ritual of greeting each day this way... to state my gratitude at having another day to learn, love, grow and create.

What a beautiful haiku.  And, what a nice way to greet the day!

i hate september
let's bump up to october.
goodbye crappy month.

september is best

when hot days are... going - gone

autumn leaves kicked up

September is still hot here, but it starts to cool down little by little.  The first leaves to turn are the cherry tree leaves in the shrine area.

Found the light today

Heard pleasant news from doctor

No more worrying

Areobics is so

Full of estrogen, Im glad

I can keep my shirt.

I first went to aerobics classes on a dare that said if I couldn't keep up I had to do the rest of the class shirtless. It was two months of four classes a week before I was able to keep my shirt on for the entire time.

we won our ball game
the score was eighteen to ten
it feels good to win.

What a big mistake

weighed myself after breakfast

the scale hasn't moved

I noticed the date, I've been tracking and restricting calories for a full month so, even though I'd already eaten breakfast I got on the scale....what a mistake! It was exactly the same as when I started... how disheartening. I'd lost like 4 lbs but it's still fluctuating up and down and now back to this. Granted I'm only 7 pounds from goal, I know fluctuation is normal.  But still.... What the H-ll?!

a typhoon passed through

then veered slowly out to sea

natural car wash

Luckily, the typhoon mainly cruised by, and the wind and rain wasn't anything to worry about.  All we got were a lot of cleaner looking cars.

next week brings new things
i wish for a happy self
positivity for me

typhoons can't stop me

 from running today,

    but I

  slipped and tumbled hard

It must have been slippery from all the rain yesterday.  I wrenched my shoulder socket where I cracked my bones three years ago.  It hurts a little, but I guess I'll live.

harbinger of fall

clustered amaryllis blooms

 after the harvest

We hiked in the mountains for five and a half hours.  On the way we saw beautiful red flowers blooming.  They bloom around the autumn equinox and remind me of the seasons changing, of the higan season in Buddhism, and the fields of stubble after the rice harvests.

For anybody wanting to see a picture, there is one in my journal entry.  Here's the link

Sounds lovely kyashiis! And Happy Autumn Equinox to all.

Here in the desert

Fall is more subtly seen

Night windows open

Zxenn.  What a lovely contrast to my poem.  In haiku, they hold poetry-making gatherings, and one poem is often juxtaposed against another on themes.  I have never experienced fall in the desert, but you gave me an insight into it.  Thanks.

I'm thinking about my lack of weight loss, so...

Weighed in on the scales

  Disappointment wells within

   Iron will ARISE!

I weigh in once a month on the 23rd, and there was no change.  But, I won't give up.  'Nuf said...

Weight gained over time

Yet I expect instant change

Reality bites.   Laughing
