Poetry Challenge - can you make a haiku poem?

Quote  |  Reply

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that is easy to make.  Things don't have to rhyme, but instead rely on specific syllable patterns.  Are there any budding poets out there?  Why don't you share your diet/exercise/lifestyle jouney with others through haiku poetry.

The syllable pattern goes like this 5 - 7 - 5 for classic poems.  Haiku in languages other than Japanese often just goes for three short lines expressing something.  Often, Japanese will choose a theme and write poetry. One of the things which create interest in the poem is a contrast in ideas in such a few words.  There is also often an explanation of the background that led to a poem's being forming.

Example:  poem in 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable rhythm followed by background information

    peanut butter jar

    calories much too high, but

    ahh, satisfaction

I was hungry and had just spent an hour jogging, so I wanted to eat something with protein.  The problem was as pay day appoaches, there is little to eat in the house except peanut butter.  It's a high calorie food that is pretty satisfying, and hey I ran, so why not indulge?

out my house window

nothing but roof tiles are seen

  typical Japan

I'm looking out the window of my office/house, and the only view is of the neighboring houses' rippling ridges of tile roofs a couple of feet away.  I like the tiles of houses on roofs in Japan.

some people on here
make me want to curse at them
because they're just mean

Gee.  Cellulitedelite, I hope that's not true.  I think most people are really supportive.  Anyway, don't let it get you down if you have had some negative stuff coming your way...

Keep the thought-invoking poems coming this way.

well.  there are just a few people that seem to TARGET me with their ridicule.  this is about the only place i can post and not have someone argue with me.  it's always the same people, the same group of people...but they don't affect my attitude.  i just do my best to remember that they're on the INTERNET and probably wouldn't say these things to my face.

i use this thread here to vent and make myself feel better on the inside.  thanks for starting it.

I didnt make this one up but I thought it was funny :)

Haikus are easy

but sometimes they don't make sense

Laur3nmae,

Thanks for contributing.  Haikus often have an element of surprise.  This one is like a koan Buddhist riddle.

Cellulitedelite,

Sometimes we can use that ire in creative ways. Which become channeled into positive ways.

Have a good day.

I had a nice ten-kilometer run around Tenjin-zaki (Cape).  It's a National Trust Movement (a UK kind of preservation system) area set aside and kept from development in its natural state of a naturally diverse tidal pool and semi-tropical grove along its edges.

Morning sun - chi gong

Energy flowing through me

Lovely Beginning

I just started a chi gong class and the instructor suggests practicing with the morning sun on your back.  It's wonderful way to begin my day.

Another nice haiku.  Chi gong.  I didn't know what it is called in English.  It's called Ki-koh-hoh in Japanese.  I have practiced some moves from it for several years.  It helps me to with my nervous leg syndrome.  According to what I have read, many trees give off nice energy, so that's one of the reasons people have nice feelings about trees.

  Majestic Kumano

    trees watch the pilgrims progress

      ancient paths of hope

The Kumano Kodo World Heritage pilgrimage route runs through my region.  I and my husband are certified guides and often walk the paths.  There are many places where ancient trees stand sentinel over shrines.  If they could see, they would have witnessed the pilgrimages of a thousand years ago which continue to the present age.

i'm having sushi
once for lunch and for dinner
sticky rice and crab.

A sliver of moon

Cradled in the morning clouds

It begins again

I woke up too early for a Saturday... 5:30am. I looked out my window and saw the clouds lit up by the rising sun and the crescent moon shining through the clouds.  Most excellent.

cellulitedelite, lucky you.  I never get tired of sushi.  They have so many kinds in Japan.  It's pretty fattening though, so I have to be careful not to eat too much.  Excellent poem :}

zxenn, sometimes it pays to wake up early.  I can't recall the number of times I have gotten up early and seen the most beautiful sunrises.  It really makes your day doesn't it?  Keep them coming.

My poem for today

Good friends, lazy talk

  Monday afternoon speeds by

 Car washed clean by rain

I drove up to the mountains and visited my best friend.  We laughed and talked and relaxed though we all have busy schedules that we put aside for a few hours.  While we were there the rain began and gave us a natural car wash.

lifestyle changes are

  buffeting me here and there

    long, lonely journey

It's hard to stick to a life-changing way of eating and exercising when the scales show no change in more than a month.  It's sort of like doing battle with your own will and your own body.  Ultimately, even with all the support of CC+ and members, it's a individual, lonely journey to enhanced health and well-being.

The couch to five 'kay'

I find myself on week nine

I can't feel my legs  Laughing

What a great poem.  You can't feel your legs?  Before you know it you'll be out there running with the best of them.

I did the Couch to 5K too.  Now I can jog/run/walk 10K.  It's amazing how baby steps will get you up to a good level of intensity in a short time.  I never would have believed it if I didn't try it myself.

Good luck on your goals, and drop by to make a poem anytime you like.

a long, long day goes

by, getting more and more behind

but... accomplished run

I ran 3K at 7 am, and since then, I haven't had a chance to slow down or catch up.  I'm tired and my back hurts from being tired.

I say good morning

a new old friend will teach me

tai chi in the park

I'm meeting one of the other ex-kung-fu students at a park this morning.  He's going to teach me tai chi.  It should be interesting.  I don't know him well but he seems very earnest and curious about life in general.  A good guy.

Tai chi looks so interesting.  How was it? Your poem gave me a good image of the start of your day with the "good morning" part.

My poem for the day...

  four speeches rehearsed

by twelve Japanese children

  leads to fluency

I am coaching kids from 1st grade to 8th grade in four different English speeches they are reciting.  They will improve their English fluency and pronunciation through their efforts, but it's very exhausting for me to coach them.  The end result is always worth it though.  Mastering a language is hard for the students and the teachers...
