Poetry Challenge - can you make a haiku poem?
Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that is easy to make. Things don't have to rhyme, but instead rely on specific syllable patterns. Are there any budding poets out there? Why don't you share your diet/exercise/lifestyle jouney with others through haiku poetry.
The syllable pattern goes like this 5 - 7 - 5 for classic poems. Haiku in languages other than Japanese often just goes for three short lines expressing something. Often, Japanese will choose a theme and write poetry. One of the things which create interest in the poem is a contrast in ideas in such a few words. There is also often an explanation of the background that led to a poem's being forming.
Example: poem in 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable rhythm followed by background information
peanut butter jar
calories much too high, but
ahh, satisfaction
I was hungry and had just spent an hour jogging, so I wanted to eat something with protein. The problem was as pay day appoaches, there is little to eat in the house except peanut butter. It's a high calorie food that is pretty satisfying, and hey I ran, so why not indulge?
Tai Chi was lovely. I did some more this morning in my backyard. I think I like it even more than the Chi gong. I can't imagine teaching anyone a new language kyashiis, you must be very patient!
Warm desert autumn
High winds turn trees to dancers
Graceful green ballet
Your poems are so good. I really love them. Have you thought about becoming a poet? I really get a sense of what you want to express (at least I think I do.)
Teaching people a new language is really hard work. It takes a command of what is happening in the learner's mind to really get them to make the leap from short term memory knowledge to more permanent language acquisition.
Today's poem...
To eat meat or fish
or something else for protein
my daily struggle
I don't want to eat meat much, so I am constantly trying to figure out how to get my 30/30/40 percentages of protein, fats, and carbs. I am learning how to use the analysis tools to keep on top of the percentages to fuel my body adequately.
making time to run
back hurts, knees, no energy
balmy day entices
It's a beautiful day. I blew yesterday's diet/exercise. I went out last night and had no will or time (for that matter) to run. But, with such beautiful fall weather beckoning, I managed to run not 5K but more than 4K. So, I'm back on course.
calories unlogged
haunt my thoughts before bedtime
tomorrow's too late
Crazy day. No free time. Ate at crazy times and no real meals. DH wanted to go out at 10 pm. Ate and drank... Don't think I went over my calories, but too tired to finish logging my food for the day. Is this becoming a pattern? It' scary.
aikido practice
seen through fall cherry tree leaves
bonfires cast shadows
The aikido world congress held at the ancient site of Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine was a beautiful setting with the leaves of the cherry trees turning oranges and yellows. The aikido practicioners showcased their skills on the raised "dojo" straw mat covered arena. People ringed the arena and admired the skill of people from more than 100 countries. The bonfires flickered and shot beautiful sparks into the darkening skies.
too much food today
coming and going all day
long diet forgotten
...helped all over town for aikido congress activities, home for an hour, out for a welcome party for a girl from sister city in australia, eating on the run in restaurants, played havoc in my eating patterns today...
Chi Gong and Tai Chi
Movement slow but powerful
Moving energy
I've been doing chi gong and tai chi a couple of times a week, I've backed down on my hour long elliptical sessions to a 1/2 hour and only do that about twice a week. I can't believe that I'm now within a 1/2 pound of my goal weight. Moving energy is exercise! added bonus, I'm not exhausted from my cardio sessions anymore and the slower focused pace of tai chi has leaked over into my life. I have found my rhythm.
How wonderful. I'm so happy so many good things are happening for you. And your poem is beautiful.
I hiked with a large group of people on Monday (a national holiday in Japan), and one hiker is from Taiwan. He led us in the stretching exercises using a form of exercise like Tai Chi, but he called it "Moving Zen Meditation." It was really nice. The movement were very slow but powerful, and we started our hike with that as a wonderful warm up.
My poem for today:
Sore throat all day long
way too many things to do
quiet rainy day
Had a hectic week, so I developed a sore throat from being overtired. I'm so far behind... but it was a peaceful rainy day (which I love). If only I could curl up with a good book.
Aw, sorry you're feeling low. Your hike sounded lovely. I love a good rainy day too.
shoulders tight-head aches
chiropractor is my friend
will call him right now
Hopefully I'll be able to get in to see him. I'm becoming so aware of the energy flow through my body that when it gets stalled like this- knotted up in my neck and shoulders I can feel it stagnating...
Interesting challenge
I will now take part aswell
I hope you don't mind...
That was an interesting topic. Sure. Enjoy making haiku poems as much as you like.
Here's mine for the day.
Meeting went too long
For me to get errands done
Put off once again
I didn't get to spend my day off like I wanted too.
A Haiku you say?
The ancient Japanese art?
Five, Seven, then Five?
I can not do it
You can not make me either
I can't stand Haiku
Boy did this bring back bad memories. I'll go drink a beer now.
Hey... Haiku is fun as long as you don't get too serious about it.
Tomorrow I run
for my bod, half marathon
sheer will conquers all
I haven't been running long, but I'm tackling a half marathon tomorrow. It's a matter of will over matter. My mind is made up that I have to run in order to burn calories in order to lose weight in order to look good at Christmas in order to keep my word about losing weight. 'Course, the body isn't quite as willing and sometimes balks against getting out and DOING it.
Hi kyashiis! I have gotten up courage to try a Haiku - could this be classified as one?
still waters run deep
haunt the shadows of my mind
fish for food today
I was walking on the shore and this came into my head.
Sure it does. Haiku is fun because it can be whatever you want it to be. It must be nice to be out walking along a shore. Try making some more.
My poem for today:
getting ready for
going on half marathon
run to become slim
I'm getting ready to run a half marathon. I'm excited and scared, but I want to become slim so bad. At 5 ft tall, I need to find ways to exercise and burn calories in a serious way.
sigh what a hard job
trying to prioritise
my goals for this life
This is how I felt after trying to limit my list of goals for Wagon Jumpers!
Yeh. The Wagon Jumper goals are hard to formulate. I have so many goals, I don't want to limit them. But, I must I guess.
Good luck on your goals this 12 week period.
Whoo - hoo, I ran it
a half marathon done in
my bagging gym clothes
Yup. I feel thinner today, although it might be only in my mind...
I can't stand haiku
Suck is the word I use to
Describe all haiku
Great way to deride the form by mocking it in a poem. Keep the poems coming. There is room for all.
My poem for today
I was so tired
what with achy muscle pains
yet streching them helps
Not feeling so good. Could hardly get through my three evening classes. When to be early, but it was too early to go to sleep. Hence, I'm doing my haiku thing that gets rid of random thoughts on nothing important.
