Is there a point when your body just says "enough"

Quote  |  Reply

I swear my body is at the point where it no longer wants to lose weight. Well, I know it never wanted to, I made it. But do you think there is a point in which you cannot go any lower. I know I need to still lose some weight. I am 5'5'' and 150 pounds. I want to get to 142-145 but I have been stuck at this point for almost 6 months now. I will go up a couple pounds then back at 150. There was one day I saw 148 but my daughter was sick the day before and I hardley ate anything and was in bed with her all day. As soon as i drank water it was right back so I know it was not real. The last 2 months I started lifting weights and increased my cardio but nothing. Even if I eat 1200 calories it doesn't seem to help. If I eat around 2000 the scale will be up the next day. So I try to keep the calories around 1400-1600. I am just really starting to think that this may be my healthy weight even though my BMI will put me at 25, If I can get it just a little lower than I will be normal weight. This is what is frustrating me so much. Why won't it let go of those last 5 pounds? Is there a point in which your body knows best and says "that's enough"?

Tami,

Have you considered that where you are may just be right for you?  You say you have maintained for six months and that sounds pretty good for your height.  The charts are generalities and sometimes our bodies just don't fit them exactly.  Just a thought.

Barbara

Barbara, I have thought about the fact that this may be what is healthy for me. But there is the part of me that no longer wants to be considered overweight. I have lost 102 pounds, I have come so far and just want the normal weight so bad.

Tammy,

I took a look at your picture and speaking as someone who is maybe old enough to be your grandmother, and for sure mother...........you don't look fat!  Maybe you are still seeing yourself as you used to be.  You look pretty fit to me.  I sometime think we see ourselves in comparison to the model twigs and you know you should want more for yourself than that.  If that is a current picture.............you look great!  Enjoy it!

Barbara

Thanks Barbara, yes it is a current pic.  I know I still see myself as overweight and don't know if that would change with the scale. Probably not but I would like to at least find out. I was just thinking that maybe at some point your body just says "this is where you are going to be" and that's that.

Technically, no.  Your metabolism does lower, but as long as you are below it you will lose weight.  Whether or not that is healthy for you is another question.  In the Keyes starvation study, the men were able to get down extremely low, with a 30% reduction in their BMR but continue to lose weight.

Are you weighing your food with a scale?  If not, you can't be sure you are eating the amount you think you are.  Cups can't be used to estimate portions.  Weigh everything...meat, veggies, fruit, grains, cereal, etc.  You'd be surprised:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjWPclrWVY

Are you eating out at all.  Restaurant estimates on calories will be off.

Are you including things like non-stick spray, splenda, artificial sugars, gum, diet soda, etc. in your calorie count?

Are you also remembering weekends?  Are you eating pretty well during the week, but 'forgetting' the weekends?  Are you over-eating at all once in awhile?  Snacking while cooking? ETc?
