reusable cloth.
another for reusable cloth bag

I have 4 reusables that usually can handled a regular sized grocery shopping.

1 is made from recycled plastic but feels like cloth, it zips itself into a small square and I keep it in my purse. It's about the size of a regular bag, a little deeper.

2 are gigantic hemp fiber bags, 1 is a hugeeeee recycled cotton tote. I keep those 3 in the car.

I try to BYOB as much as possible!
plastic. yes, i know its not as great for the environment, but it is so good for other uses - and they are free.

I've actually gotten to the point where I will avoid stopping at the grocery store if I've forgotten to bring my cloth bag(s).

I use Baggu bags for my groceries, which are available in cute colors and fold into a tiny pocket. I can keep several in my purse easily.

Lately I've stopped using the plastic produce bags as well. I use Ecobags, which are very lightweight and come in two different sizes.

Yes, the clerks occasionally make fun of me, but I don't care. And now that we no longer have plastic bags to use as trash bags, I'm switching over to Biobags to line my trash can. They're biodegradable!

i keep mine (4 of 'em) in the car, so i'm never without them (if i walk to the store i take a backpack).  i used to sometimes forget them in the car, but i kept making myself go back...now i don't forget anymore ;-)

okay, occasionally i forget when i'm somewhere other than the grocery store.  i don't worry about that too much, because it's handy to have a few plastic bags in the house.  when i travel, i pack my shoes in them, and i keep one in my bag for library books, etc.

Bring your own. The cloth bags are bigger, sturdier, and reusable. What's not to love?

Whatever is most determental to the enviorment, i do that....  normally i just bring a flaming tire with me when i shop.
Reusable bags.  I got several from Whole Foods Market that fold up into themselves and zip closed, making neat little packets.  Very convenient!

I'm still getting used to having them though and keep forgetting them.  And when I do big shopping, I don't nearly have enough.

Working on it, though!
I use plastic - but I bring them home and reuse them (trash bags, lunch bags, storage, etc).
i reuse the plastic bags too, mostly for picking up dog poop on walks.
I always bring my own for grocery shopping.  At other stores, like when shopping for clothes, I don't but I always re-use those bags at home for garbage, carrying books, etc.
what i like best about the reusable ones is that they stay upright, even in the car, even when i take corners too fast.  mine don't zip up into a pocket, though.
plastic... we recycle them to scoop kitty poop.. and use for small garbage can liners.

I tried the cloth bag thing.. and I always forget them.
I like the re-usable ones because they hold more and I can carry them over my shoulder instead of lugging them around in my hands and hoping the plastic doesn't break on me. I'm usually on foot and taking the bus when I stop for groceries, so comfortable carrying is really important to me. It's also why I have to have the most compact bags possible, because I have to carry them around in my purse instead of  stashing them in my car.

Cloth bags all the way. They don't break & are easier to carry.

My husband & I lived in the Netherlands a few years ago. You have to bring your own bag to the supermarket, they don't have any for you to use. Most retail stores give you a reusable bag when you make purchases so you don't even have to buy them. I don't understand why places here don't.

Reusable would be nice but like the other's have said, at least the plastic ones can be reused for other things.
I use paper and my husband doesn't ask, so he gets plastic. We use the paper for sorting our recycled items. I have purchased the reuseable bags and bring them for "small" trips.
I have reusable but sometimes I'll still get paper so we can put our recyclables in for garbage day.  It took me a while to remember to bring them into the store, old habits die hard.
