Soo... Tomorrow I'm going to the cinema and I'm planning to use like a "promotion" I have on a card, that offers me a bag of popcorn and a soda... I'm worried about the popcorn, because about the soda, I can choose the light or the zero one.

I'd rather choose the salty one than the sweet one, what do you think?

And is popcorn healthy at all?

Thanks :)

To put it bluntly, not really.  At least, the movie theater kind is not.  A small, unbuttered popcorn will put you back about 400 calories and 27g of fat, 19g of which are saturated.  Add butter to that and you're more around 630 calories.  If you want the popcorn, make sure to leave room for it in your food plan for the week.

I think I'll just choose the salty one. And I'll eat the popcorn and the soda as lunch, so I don't eat both. I know that's not very good for me, but it's only going to happen this time...

But thank you for the information ;)

uhh.. sorry to argue, but unbuttered popcorn is very low-cal.. where are you getting these facts from. where would all the fat come from on plain popcorn?

The air popped one is, but in movie theaters they use oil. That is where the fat is coming from.

oh ok. thank you.

OP why dont you get a diet soda and give away your popcorn?

Or if you want, I've heard of some people bringing their own popcorn from home (airpopped) in ziplocs to the theatres. With the huge purses that everyone has these days, it should fit right in there!

Personally, I indulge in buttered popcorn at the movies since I'm careful most days and only go to the movies every once in a while.

Plain air popped corn is actually good for you.  Corn is a whole grain.  However, it's hard to season the air popped kind.  The salt doesn't stick.

so how do you make the air popped corn taste good and not so dry, I would like to start popping my own instead of buying all that fat but I had an air popper years ago but stopped using it because the popcorn was so dry and flavorless. Any sugesstions?

I spray low cal over the popcorn and then apply some salt, it'll stick then. You'll add maybe 10-15 extra calories from the spray.

I have one of these:http://www.amazon.com/Back-Basics-PC17591-Mic rowave-Popcorn/dp/B000ZZJGUK/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UT F8&s=home-garden&qid=1248037069&s r=8-9

You put it in the microwave and either add no oil before you put it in or as much as you like.  I put in just a teaspoon (about forty calories) and plenty of salt and I like it.

I went to the movies and hadn't had movie popcorn in a loooong time and I got a small w/o butter just for fun and only ended up eating half of it b/c it was sooo salty and it gave me a horrible stomach ache :( So if you're not used to eating stuff like that anyway maybe you should pass just to save your stomach lol

and to jrabbit about making your own popcorn- I take a brown paper bag, put a couple tbsp popcorn in it, and spray some PAM on it and microwave it about 2 min or so. Then I spray a little i can't believe it's not butter on it and I found these super low cal popcorn seasoning things at meijer, that actually aren't too bad on sodium either, and I sprinkle that on it. It's delicious!
