Poro -- A spicy Indian omelette (quick and low cal)

Quote  |  Reply

This is a Parsi dish that is 186 calories if you make it with just a little bit of oil (more oil = more cals). I like my poro with lime squeezed on it and some salt. Some other folks like poro with ketchup, or with strawberry jam. I eat really spicy food, so if you only like a bit of spice, cut back on the chilies and the chili powder.

Ingredients

1/3 small onion, diced fine
4
red thai dragon chilies (4 is quite hot, 1 is mild.. by my standards)
1
tbsp coriander, chopped fine
3/4
tbsp mint, chopped fine (optional)
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/4
tsp turmeric
1/4
tsp chili powder
1/4
tsp cumin powder
5
stems cilantro, chopped fine
2
eggs
1/4
tsp salt
1
tsp olive oil

Directions

  1. Beat the eggs

  2. Add all of the other ingredients except oil and beat a bit more

  3. Put the oil in a pan (non-stick would be great), and warm it up

  4. Pour the egg mixture into the pan and fry on medium to high heat

  5. When it's cooked enough to flip it, flip it

  6. When it's cooked enough to take it off the pan, eat it up Smile

that sounds wonderful! I love thai chilis. Would this also work with the ground chili that comes in jars or is fresh best?

Good question! I have only ever made it with fresh chillies :)  It never hurts to try different things though.  If it tastes good with the ground chillies from a jar, please post and let me know.

Ooo thanks. I love omelettes. Usually I spice mine with garam masala, black pepper, and some light soy sauce.

yumm that sounds delic.

That sounds fantastic, and I have (nearly) all the ingredients to make it!  I love spicy things, too.  I will replace the thai chilies for some habanero that I grow myself, though.

Question, if I want to add some veggies, any in particular (aside from bell peppers & onions) that you would recommend?

Thank you for sharing!  Will be making this soon!

Hi cc31 :)

I've only made poro the way I described in the recipe (onions, spicy peppers, and cilantro).  But I bet it would taste great with other veggies.  If you do experiment, please let me know how it goes.

Mushrooms go great with it, but you have to sautay them first a bit then pour the mixture on top.

That sounds great!  Next time I have mushrooms I'll try that.

This dish is excellent!!  Thank you for sharing the recipe shanasedai!  I just made this for dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Since I was having this for dinner, I added a few veggies, which I sauteed beforehand: a little bit of mushrooms, red bell pepper (in addition to the hot pepper), and zucchini.  Then I added the egg/spice mixture, and sprinkled lime juice on it once served.  I had it with a quick homemade raita (just fat free yogurt & cucumber mixed together).

IT WAS DELICIOUS!  This will definitely become a stand-by at my house ;)

Thank you!!

I'm glad you liked it cc31 Smile  I had poro for lunch today.  Didn't have any lime at home though... it's so much better with lime juice on it.

I went on a bike adventure today.  I intended to bike for a bit over an hour.  Instead, my bike broke 2.5 km from my home, so it ended up being half walk half bike ride.  I was ravenous when I got home.

So I made a 3-egg poro :) Even more yummy!!

This is absolutely delicious. I have been eating it almost every day since I found this recipe a week ago!

I omit the red peppers and instead use a pinch of red pepper flakes.

Glad you like it  Cool

You have really started a CC food trend! Love it!
