Any positive experiences with diet pills/aids?

Quote  |  Reply

I have been using this website for a month and love it, have told all my friends and family about it. I keep track of everything I eat and enter all my activity.  I try to manage a 1500 calorie deficit per day . So far I have lost 14 lbs.  I was watching TV and saw an ad for an appetite suppressant and was wondering if anything out there really worked? I have seen ads for dexatrim, hoodia gordonii, hydresscut(sp), lipozene, etc. Any good or bad experiences with any diet pills, aids, or appetite suppressants either over the counter or prescribed? Would love to hear  your feedback. I am determined to obtain my goal weight but unfortunately have 85plus lbs to go. I plan to continue eating healthy and exercising and being an active participant of this wonderful site

thanks

I tried hoodia and it made me ravenous!!  Totally not the effect I was going for.

I used cayenne supplements in the past - supposedly increases metabolism.  I did loose weight but I don't know if that had anything to do with it.  When I tried cayenne this time I think i got a stronger version and I got heartburn and other bodily functions burned like h-e-double hockey sticks.

Sooo... I have come to the conclusion to just do it on my own, slowly... after all, the faster you lose weight the more chance you have of gaining it back.

If you buy hoodia you have to make sure to buy a brand that's real. I got some but I think it was counterfeit because it didn't do anything.

The best pill for weight loss is Adderall, the ADD med. If you don't have ADD, then I think that Phentermine is an amphetamine too. Nothing works for weight loss like amphetamines.

As for OTC stuff, I've gotten good results with supplements but I'm not sure if it was the supplements or if it was all the exercise that I was doing (or both). A good safe supplement is chromium picolinate.

Crack and herion also work really well, so I've heard.

Just wondering how you determined that a 1500 cal deficit was appropriate? This site doesn't usually recommend anything over 1000 and while that is just a guideline and may not be appropriate for everyone it's usually a decent starting point.

Assuming that a 1500 calorie deficit is appropriate for you, are you having trouble keeping that deficit? If you aren't starving to maintain that deficit why would you need an appetite surpressant?

my calorie intake is 2875 calories a day according to the intake questions, I eat 2200 to 3000 calories a day, it's a lot of food, I also burn a lot of calories and my burn meter by the end  of the day is anywhere 4300 to 4800.  So thats how i figured the deficit 1000 to 1500 calories.  I would love to eat only 2000 calories a day. I don't think that would be depriving myself too much. thats why i am interested in the appetite surpressants.

OK, what you need to realize is that your body can only get so much energy from fat per day.  The study I've seen puts that number at 31 calories per pound of fat per day.  When you have a calorie deficit your body needs to get the energy it's not getting from food elsewhere, which mean either from fat or from muscles.  Since you can only get so many calories from fat the rest must come from muscle and therefore if your deficit is too big you'll actually burn muscle instead of fat.

You are already running a really big calorie deficit and I would imagine that if you surpress your appetite and make the deficit bigger you'll only be burning more muscle and not anymore fat, which is counterproductive.

Crystal meth, too!  You won't be hungry for days, and it'll rot your teeth-- maybe a deterrent from eating in the future??

amphetamines! total weight loss cure! let's all go call our neighborhood dealers and forget the calories! have 4 bigmacs and and 8th of coke!!

How are you determining your calories burned per day?Are you using the numbers gym equipment says? Are you setting your activity as sedentary then adding all the exercise on top of that. Are you setting your activity as moderately active or active then not adding on top of that.

What are your stats and activity? Your numbers seem really high...

As to the diet pills...please don't go near them.

Congrats on the 14 pounds lost! I would recommend just setting an activity level and sticking to that. 4800 calories per day sounds pretty high.  I work out about 15 hours per week right now, and my calories burned only get up to about 2400-2600 depending on whether I am active or very active.  Granted, I'm at 170, and definitely shouldn't lose 85 pounds.

So, I'm gonna guesstimate some numbers for you....

I'm putting you in as male, 6 feet, 280 pounds, and light activity, which gives me 3800 calories per day.  At moderate activity, you are at about 4000 calories. If I were you, I'd just be patient, but don't put in the extra activity, just pick an activity level and go with it.

I'd also recommend about 1000 calories of deficit, instead of 1500, but whatever works for you :-)

I took mega green Tea w/ hoodia when i started my diet last june. I stopped around september or so. I dunno if it was my mind or not, i did lose weight while taking it but I'm still maintaining and losing ever since then so i don't really have an answer.

I was reading recently that there was more hoodia sold in 2006 than has ever been or could be harvested from Africa, where the plant was originally found.  Seems to me that 99.99% of hoodia is made of something else... likely caffeine, that is a common substance used to "cut" diet pills since it is A) cheap and B) gives you a gittery buzz that one may associate with a working diet pill.  The FDA does not regulate supplements so there is no telling what you get with most of these pill

A friend of mine used Alli, which is the ONLY FDA approved weight loss drug on the market.  And frankly, if the FDA does not approve something, I will not use.  She lost weight, but quit after 8 weeks or so because A) it is a little expensive and B) if you eat too much fat (which is a pretty low amount according to their literature) you tend to have anal leakage that is rather oily.  Not very pleasant.

But, if you are willing to stick with a low fat diet (they provide a long starting manual with the introduction pack) it can help you lose 50% more weight.  Ie. if you lose 20 pounds through diet and exercize, you could lose 30 pounds with Alli.

Congratulations on your success thus far and good luck!

I've never used any appetite supressant, but I have used the ECA stack in the past, with great success.

I just have to put my own two little cents in here...

FYI...  Not EVERYONE loses weight while using speed (ie crystal meth, whatever you want to call it).  My Mom was (is?) a meth addict for over 15 yrs and has maintained at least 350 lbs that whole time.  She is 5' 2"

It may help at first, but once you become an addict, you may not be affected the same.  She was totally able to eat whatever she wanted and infact got hungary...  She just couldn't function any other way.

P.S.  For anyone thinking of trying this diet method, my mother is now homeless the last 6 mo's living in her car or with friends...  Fun Fun Fun...

Okay, I'm done preaching...  Sorry if I got a little riled up, I know everyone was joking, but it's a very serious issue and I see teens on here all the time and don't want them to get the idea it might actually be okay.

I do not lose weight no matter what - have stayed for years at 140 despite nearly always being either on a diet or maintenance.  Now I am doing nothing different, and the weight is going up dramatically!

I am more than frustrated.  I know that heart problems run in my family, and the problem with a lot of the over the counter diet stuff is it has a lot of caffeine.  I already drink lots of coffee - and the speeding up from that doesn't make me lose weight.

Finally out of desperation because my weight is really suddenly going out of control without eating any differently, I tried the Mega Green T, and the the Triple Fat Burner, and another generic Green Tea product.

What I've done with the green Tea pills (not the liquid gels, but they also sell a hard kind that is cheaper) is split them in half so as not to have too much caffeine at once.  I then take only 1.5 pills each day vs. their suggested 2 pills by midafternoon.

Although they give me a boost of energy which is great as I normally feel tired all the time, there is no difference in my weight loss.   The boost of energy feels great, but I really wonder if there will be some long term problem.

I am now thinking of trying Alli, but I don't eat that much fat to begin with.  Alli is supposed to prevent the absorption of some of the fat.  I don't eat much more than a small piece of meat (deck of cards) a day, and some days I have protein from vegetable sources.

I am also thinking of the product now advertised on TV that is supposed to be for women - I forget the name.  Problem is it is around $30.   The Green Tea stuff is under $10.

I know it is wrong to do this, but I've spent 6 months with a nutritionist.  I've tried eating the right amount of calories to supposedly cause a gradual weight loss.  Instead my weight alway stays the same no matter what.  My nutritionist finally threw up her hands - says I'm resistant to weight loss.

This is getting desperate since I'm suddenly up 10 lbs in the past year after many years stable, and if this goes on, in 5 years I'll be in serious trouble.

We are all human.  We cannot break the laws of thermodynamics.  The energy you intake is spent in the body, and no more is created.

If you are getting fat, either you are consuming more food energy (measured in calories), or something has happened to your body that is making it use less energy, and put the excess into fat storage.

To the original poster, some people find that a greens supplement does something to their appetite.  A tablespoon of a product based on spirulina consumed with water in the morning a while after breakfast is all you need.

Back in my military day's I used Xenadrine when it still had the ephedra in it.  I almost suffered a massive heart attack.  For the rest of my life I will be treated and on meds for congestive heart failure.  I say...do it the good old fashion way!!  But that's just me.  Now I'm back to health, eating healthy, and training for my first full marathon!  Cheers Laughing

I used xenadrine for several years, and have great results, and no ill effects from it.  I wish they still sold it, because used properly, IMO, it's of great benefit.  misuse of any supplement or drug, can be dangerous(not saying you did that), or using a supplement without knowing your own medical history is also dangerous(not saying you did that either).

I used as directly and drank TONS of water.  My cardiologist said it kept my heart rate pumping at a dangerous level for so long that all my muscles in my heart pooped out.  Guess I was the luck of the drawl.  I just wanted to share my experience...maybe it may help someone to think twice about it.
