Possible to gain weight solely through nutritional supplements?

Quote  |  Reply

Hello you guys :)

Let's see! I have stuggled with bingeing (still do), but I have managed to exert some control over it only if I keep away from certain foods. As a result I have lost weight I really couldn't afford to lose (and I don't like it either) so I'm looking to now GAIN (argh) about 5 or 6 pounds.

I fear, because last time I had to put on weight was how my bingeing disorder STARTED! I don't want to go down that road again. I feel good and healthy eating the way I do now, so I was wondering if I could maintain my diet, but introduce a nutritional supplement that makes you gain weight, and whether that will help me to easily put on the weight.

This is quite important for me, please give me your advice, thank you so much :)

i think that sounds like a great plan, at least in the short term.  you'll need more calories to maintain your higher weight, though, so while you're taking the supplement (you mean boost or ensure, something like that, right?), you should try to increase you food intake gradually as well.

hopefully it won't take much; just an extra snack of something calorie-dense, like nuts or cheese (or an icecream sundae Smile).

That's great! thanks a lot!

I'm living in Spain atm so we don't have boost or ensure, but i'm looking to go to the drug store and ask a farmacist :)

If your normal maintenance diet is 2000 cals you'll gain weight on 2500-3000 cals a day.  Add the extra calories in the form of snacks.  Nuts and raisins are nicely calorific, for example.  An avocado here, some chorizo there, a glass of orange juice, an extra bread rolll ....it's easy to get an extra 500-1000 cals from the excellent foods you have around you in Spain.   Supplements won't make you gain weight any quicker.

I agree with gi-jane...supplements like ensure are VERY expensive.  At a cvs near me they're $12.00 for 6 ensures!  And really, they're only 350 calories for the "plus" variety.  There are so many ways you can add 350 calories that are cheaper:

  • 1/2 cup nuts or trail mix
  • 3/4 cup of granola (dry)
  • 12 oz of whole milk with 2 TB nesquik chocolate powder
  • 1 slice whole wheat bread with 2  TB peanut butter
  • Smoothie:  8 oz whole milk with banana and strawberries
  • 1 cup of lowfat cottage cheese or yogurt with 1/4 c nuts
  • apple with 2 TB peanut butter
  • 1/2 c oatmeal made with 1 c whole milk
  • cereal with milk and dried fruit/and or nuts

If you aren't looking to gain but 5-6 lbs, the best way to go is via simply adding a little more food. If you are in a hurry to get that weight on, I recommend "CYTO LEAN MUSCLE MASS Gainer". It will cost about 50. for a 6lb jug in vitamin world and that jug should last you about 3.5 weeks.  There is Cyto muscle milk which is in supermarkets and cheaper, but the calories and the protien arent as high as the lean mass gainer. Myoplex is gotten in powder form or bottles similiar to ensure and is a little better than the cyto products simply because most supplements are just that "supplement" to an existing daily 2000 cal diet whereas myoplex is a genuine MRP and is considered a meal. I am not suggesting that you rely wholly on supplements, I am offering an edge to help u gain quickly. If u have never used supplemnts before then the results can be dramatic for begiiners whom already eat a good amount of food and you can shock your body and see as much as 10-15 lbs weight gain in your first month of adding supplements. Alot of powdered and premixed supplements are very high in sugar content, the two I am suggesting are not as high as most others. If you want to try myoplex you can get a free sample voucher by visiting " EAS sports supplements" website http://eas.com/.
