Possible to hydrate too much?

Quote  |  Reply

Since I offically start my weight gain, I also decided to cut soda from my diet, not entirly but significantly.  I was drinking at least 6-8 diet sodas a day, I know I know...  But now I drink 1 or 2 sodas/energy drinks a week.  To make up for the lack of soda I have been drinking a lot more water, probably one of the reasons I feel bloated a lot.  I drink at least 4 quarts of water a day (I drink 1-2 2quart pitchers/day and a couple of cups of tea), and was just curious if that is a bad thing, or if it means that the weight I do gain will be mostly water?

well, you don't gain water weight by DRINKING water.  water weight is a result of electrolyte changes, particularly your potassium and sodium ratio.

That said, you CAN drink too much, but that tends to be if you were to do it all at once...drinking a lot of water at once can lead to water intoxication, which is a sudden change in electrolytes.  That is very dangerous.

But 4 L in the course of a day is fine.  I drink about that much.

Most people only need about 1 or 2 litres of water a day unless they're very overweight, doing a lot of exercise, have a strenuous job or live/work in a hot climate/environment.  Water shouldn't cause bloating or weight-gain, however drinking a lot of water will fill the stomach temporarily.   For that reason, don't drink right before you eat or during a meal ....  If you're trying to gain weight eat your meal first and then sip your drinks afterwards.

NB.... If you're drinking so much out of habit you could probably trim it down a little.  If you're drinking because you're constantly thirsty, if you wake up a lot in the night to drink or go to the toilet then you should talk to your doctor.  Excessive thirst can be symptomatic of certain conditions.

excessive thirst, huh.  I do wake in the middle of every night, usually around 2:30 am to go to the bathroom and then again when I get up for work at 5:45 am.
