is it possible to lose weight, and not starve.

Quote  |  Reply
i've somehow gained 15lbs over the last year, and i need to get it off.  but i'm not willing to starve or be very hungry because that leads to binges and feeling horraible.  i lost about 15lbs before on the slimfast diet, but i remember being hungry and grumpy and it just wasn't a pleseant experience.

i want to hear YOUR stories about how you lost the weight without starving.

Thanks everyone!

You should never be starving while you're trying to lose weight. This will cause you to

a: not lose any weight at all

or

b: gain it all back right away as soon as you start eating a little more

Just use the tools on this site and figure out how many calories you should be eating and you should be okay. One thing I do is try to make sure thatmy "grams eaten" is the same or bigger than my calorie intake. This means 'm eating a ton of food, but it's all low call, healthy stuff.

PS: I love your username, that's actually my username on a different blog!

I did something like a slimfast diet before, which only gives you very little calories (which is wrong to begin with) and on top of that you have liquid food, runs right through you, so it makes you extra hungry (maybe that's just me, but I hated it and indeed was grumpy all day and way more fixed on food than ever) Right now I AM losing weight and eating my belly full on average between 1400 and 1600 calories a day! So yes it can definitely be done. The thing is that you probably still think you have to eat about 1000 calories a day to be able to lose weight, but if you read all the information on the right way of losing weight (500-700 calories deficit (with an absolute max of 1000 cals deficit) and the more-calories-out-than-in theory) you will see it is not as hard as you thought.

Happy losing!

haha! thanks. it is a cute name...

i think that if stick to my giant salads, i'll be good to go.  i'm a bit worried about my working out too since i injured myself. no more running for me. been replaced by swimming and yoga. hopefully it will be enough.

i had 2,000 calories yesterday &was STARVING. idk.. you have to feel hunger. theres no way to lose weight without it.
I eat between 1600-1800 a day (depending on if I go to the gym or not) and I have never been hungry. I have to make smarter decisions and choose lots of veggies and not high fat items but I've never even remotely been hungry and I still lose weight.

According to the stats here I eat roughly 1,500 cals a day. I am never hungry. I eat 3 meals a day only.  I have lost a total of 9 lbs in January.

But then again, I'm a vegetarian.  When you eat a lot of roughage, you just don't get hungry.  And despite what people think, raw veggies are very filling and satisfying.

I don't binge, because I'm not hungry. I don't have mood swings because I don't eat sugar or simple carbs.  I breezed right over my PMS, no mood swings, no cramps (I was on prozac for this before).

yeah I've been on a diet for about 3 weeks and I have hardly felt hungry at all, you just have to choose good foods like fruit, veg and other high fibre foods. Protein is also good for keeping you full for longer. Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day and you should feel less hungry.
well i just started up so i can't report any weight loss, but what i've really noticed is that it really depends on what i do with the calories i'm given.... if i have 300 calories to eat and they're mostly carbs i noticed i'm hungry again pretty soon and looking for more to eat... but if i make it mostly protein it lasts me much longer and i'm not even hungry.... so just doing this i've been able to cut down on calories and not be hungry... a snack of an apple and peanut butter lasts me longer than crackers.... i definately have no desire to be starving and don't think you should be... but i don't need to eat the second i feel a rumble, eventually i think you learn to get by on a little less... i'm a vegetarian, my bfs not, but he lost a lot of weight by switching a  lot of his meat meals to veggie ones... using the "fake" stuff you can get similar tastes for much less fat and calories and they packed with protein, you just have to try them out til you find what you like.

I lost about 12 lbs about 2 years ago using Calorie count. Before that I  was wondering why I wasn't losing weight even though I'm very active.  According to the guidelines I was probably expending 2000-2200 calories a day, but when i added my normal food intake - i was eating about that much.  No wonder I wasn't losing weight!  I decided to try to have a 300-500 caloric deficit/day. The weight steadily came off.   I had to try to find the right balance of food so that i wasn't hungry during the day.   If you're caloric deficit you won't always feel totally full and sometimes you'll be a little hungry.  My trick was to always have a healthy snack - an energy bar, shake, cottage cheese or even a portion of something like nuts.   And of course, if you make good choices for your meal, you'll get more nutrition and volume to make you feel less hungry.

Also, when i made things like salads, I made sure there was something with protein and fat in the salad to make it much more satisfying.   I just focused on measuring it out but that little bit of blue cheese, tuna, feta, did wonders for making "rabbit" food more satisfying.
