Possible thyroid...

Quote  |  Reply
My mom thinks that I may have a thyroid problem. She's been dealing with it for the past few years, and thinks she may have passed it on to me. I get tired easily, have trouble losing weight, my temp is 97.2-97.6 in the morning. I personally don't know much about it. What other symptoms are there, can I actually lose weight with this problem, and how else will it affect me?

if there is any question.. go get a test done.. :)  it's simple.. they just draw a little bit of blood and that's it.

does your mom have hyper or hypo thryoid?  one is an overactive (hyper) and one is underactive (hypo)

i have hypothryoid and my symptoms included:  depression, thinning hair, eyebrows falling out (from the outside in.. looks weird), tired, cold, menstural problems, dry skin, gastric problems (similar to ibs.. but not as severe)..   all of the symptoms of hypothyroid can be attributed to many other causes though, which is why it's necessary to be tested to find out for sure.

IF you are hypo, losing weight is hard without taking a hormone suppliment.  i'm not going to say it's not possible, but for me i gained weight while on a low calorie diet before i was diagnosed.  Now that my hormone level is regulated, i'm doing much better and have lost weight.
Sounds like no fun. I work in a hospital, so getting tested should be no problem. Mom has hypothyroid. This could be why I'm so chilled in the morning! Mom has a tendency to by hyper about anything medical, so I don't really want to make a big deal about it. Is this something that needs to be taken care of or is it just annoying? I want to take care of myself, don't get me wrong, but I don't want run to the dr everytime I had a symptom for something.
Taking care of it is a really good idea, mainly because it causes so many things to be a hassle.  It can get serious but for most of us it is just a pain in the neck to deal with the junk that comes from it.  Personally I can't take hormones and am still trying to find something I can do for it and mostly trying not to gain anymore weight than I already have.

Go get tested and remember that if your test comes out near the low end of normal with your temperature the way you say it is you are probably hypo even though the test says otherwise.  Tests are a range for normal not necessarily gospel for everybody.
Hi lilz3,

For lots of good information about hypothyroidism inlcuding symptom checkslists and appropriate tests and treatments you can go to:

http://thyroid.about.com/od/symptomsrisks/a/s ymptomsrisks.htm

You may have to type it into your address bar to bring up the page.

Also, we have a forum in this section called Hypothyroid Club.   Lots of good input going on there too.

   Good luck!

Sierra
With a low temp it sounds like it could be. It is also hereditary. When you get the test done make sure they check your T3 AND T4 levels. There is nothing worse than low thyroid and if you are hypo and not on medication it's nearly impossible to lose weight! Good luck!
