Post-baby pants size

Quote  |  Reply

I have quite a bit of baby weight to lose, but, my question is this:

After you lost your baby weight, did you still go up a few pants sizes because of your hips? Or, did your hips shrink back down?

I had a baby 7 weeks ago, and  went pants shopping yesterday to discover that I needed a size 16. 5 years ago, I was this same weight and I fit into a size 10 of the same brand pants. My hips are still pretty wide. I'm just wondering if I'll ever fit into my pre-pregnancy 6's again when I lose the weight, or if I'm likely to need a larger size because of my hips.

The hip bones themselves should go back down.  If you need to lose weight, you'll probably need to lose some there as well.  My sister has had a baby, and now her hips are like 30 inches, smallest hips ever, so there is hope.  She is quite thin, however.

Congratulations on your new baby!

Trust me, I've been there when it comes to losing the baby weight, especially being a bigger size at the same weight.  That is really frustrating!  A few years before I had my first child, I had gained some weight and at 135, I wore a size 12.  I lost all the weight plus some, going into the low 100's before I became pregnant with my first one.  After I had her, I weighed 135 again, except I took a 16 instead of a 12.  I was on Zoloft at the time, and I think it had a lot to do with it, because I actually gained weight in the year after I had my daughter even though I was eating very healthy, counting calories and exercising.  I went off Zoloft about six months after my second one was born and the weight started coming off immediately.  So it might be caused by the medications you're taking, like it was my case.  I've also heard from other people that taking certain birth control pills or having hypothyroidism can cause it too, so you might want to check with your doctor about those things.

I've been told by many people that I would never fit into the same size pants I did pre kids because my hips would widen.  I didn't find that to be the case at all.  Even when I weighed almost two hundred pounds after having my second baby, my proportions were pretty much the same as before except the measurements were bigger.  After losing about 70 pounds my hips went back down to basically what they were before I had children, and now I actually take a smaller size than I did pre-kids (size 4/6 in pants at 131 pounds), so there's a really good chance you'll be back in your old jeans again, though it might take a year or two (I'm not sure how all those celeb moms do it in 3 months--my guess is either extraordinary luck or surgical intervention.)

My hips, 10 months after having julia are still very wide.  My pants now are a size 10, huge in the waist, tight in the hips.  I weigh less than my heaviest weight and I've never been in a size 10.  Although recently I've been fitting into a size 8 but the scale isn't budging so maybe my inches are starting to change.  I say give it at least two years if you really want to dedicate to getting your body back to pre-baby-  and then of course; the other one comes along :)

I was reading online about a lot of celebrities choosing to have c-sections and getting a tummy tuck at the same time.

After my first child, I never got back down to my pre-pregnancy weight (which was borderline underweight) but I did get back down to my pre-pregnancy size. It took about 2.5 years only because I didn't know how to lose weight.

This time around, I'm 7 months PP and back to my size 4 pre-pregnancy jeans. They're tighter than they were but I also have roughly 10 pounds left to lose. I never had issues with my hips because 1. I have super narrow hips and 2. I had c-sections and neither one of my kids dropped very much into my pelvis.

I, too, have heard the same thing about celebrities. I read one new celebrity mom (Jessica Alba? Jennifer Garner?) admit to using all kinds of Spanx and slimming undergarments after baby. They can also afford personal trainers, chefs and nutritionists.
