Post-surgery diet

Quote  |  Reply

Next week I go into hospital for major surgery, are there any gotchas in respect of diet during recovery?

It will be several months before I'm back to a sensible level of activity and I want to ensure that I don't put on excess weight. I don't though want to compromise my recovery.

FYI, I'm female, 49, 5'10" and currently 190lbs, my target weight is 176lbs. Below that I start to look gaunt.

i lost 14 pounds in three weeks after my major surgery.  i wouldn't worry ;)

I rencently just has surgery - what are you going in for? Luckily I was only in for 5 days (I begged to get out) and then slowly but surely added things back to my diet... eating enough is just as important during recovery as it is during normal times... my surgeron told me that when you are recovering from surgery it's like your body is running a marathon. So honestly, you shouldn't stress out too terribly about putting on any weight - you have to focus on getting better and not hurting yourself again!

I'll be in for 8 days for GRS. What bugs me most is going to be the enforced idleness as I won't be able to do much for quite a while afterwards.

My Papa just had surgery and the doctor told him to avoid tomatoes.  Apparently tomatoes have something in them that delays or interrupts the healing process.

Make a bunch of healthy foods in advance to surgery - as nutrient rich as possible. Freeze a bunch, and then its easy to make the healthy rather than 'easy' choice while recovering and not 100% yourself. And it will help balance out any comfort like food or treats that may be supplied by well intentioned family and friends who may not be thinking about calories!
