Post workout protein drinks/powders?
I'm interested in trying something like this to get more bang out of my weight lifting sessions. However, I have absolutely no idea what to get/what brand or whatever. I also DON'T want to bulk up, I'm trying to lose weight. What form of protein is best for that? Also, what brands/products have you guys used? Do they help/are they worth it?
I've heard a lot about EAS myoplex but it's a wee bit pricey and I'd like some feedback before I go spend oodles of money.
Thanks!
i like to drink BSN dessert shakes (cinnamon roll is my favorite) and blend it with ice and either milk or water.. they are really really good.. helps me after workout and keeps me full.. i use one scoop by the way and its 130 cal
Biochem Natural
80 Calories/20g Protein/1g Carbohydrates per scoop
It's unsweetened with just a hint of vanilla. Normally blend it up with a cup of milk (works well with water/coffee/soy milk/almond milk too) and half a cup of blueberries. No nasty aftertaste with this one. (finally)
I went through quite a few before I found the Biochem. Any products that used artifical sweeteners were automatically excluded and all the ones I tried that were sweetened with Stevia were much too sweet. (why is it that everything must be overly sweet?) Some also had dissolving issues.
As far as the Stevia sweetened products, Designer Whey Vanilla was tollerable if hit with a good shot of cinnamon but had an odd aftertaste and the Chocolate was too milk chocolate for my tastes and too sweet. Would have preferred a nice bitter dark chocolate.
The brand of protein powder, drink, etc., doesn't matter. Don't think you have to spend a bunch of money on this, as there are a lot of good kinds out there that are for a good price. EAS can be expensive.
A middle of the road brand, as far as price goes, is Optimum Nutrition, and it's the one I like the best for taste. It is also easy to mix into water, and does not need any fancy prep work.
It would be a good idea, whatever brand you choose, to make sure that the protein is low-carb and that it includes some essential vitamins and amino acids to help with the synthesis process. Glutamine is a must.
No protein powder (even the ones marked as "mass gainer") will cause you to bulk up (by itself). Bulking is part genetics, part overall diet, and part training. No need to worry about this one. Unless you're consuming an overabundance of calories for what you need, you will not get bulky.
The important thing is to find one that tastes good and provides a good amount of protein for what you need.

Thanks for the advice :) I've just never bought protein powder before and I just want to buy the right thing and not get ripped off.
