Pot Stickers - home made beef

Quote  |  Reply

Does anyone know the approx calorie per beef pot sticker?

Evidently, potstickers are not normally made with beef, but they have about 50 calories each, using ground beef.  The chicken ones are about 70 calories each, and the pork potstickers are about 66 each.  Don't know if this is helpful, or not, but there you go.

Thank you for the info.

If you are still out there, do you have any idea approx how many calories in a cup of veggie chilli, home made?

Depends on the region. In Russia they are called Pelmeni, close relative to Monti (Kazakh version), and are made with beef. Mmm, I need to make some, but it's so much work. :(

In Mongolia they make mutton potstickers called buuz. After living there for several months, I honestly don't care if I never see another buuz for the rest of my life.

To the OP: the calorie count is going to depend on the size of your potstickers and the quality of beef you use, so it's pretty hard to hazard a guess.

Ah yes, they are called Manti in Kazakhstan. Mmm I love them!!!!! Did they also have Beshbarmak there? I once had it on a very special occasion with horse meat. I saw it being killed earlier in the day (too much info?), so the meat was as fresh as it gets.

No wonder I like Asian/Indian food so much, some of it is just a variation of what I grew up with.

Well, I can tell you, I just made a new recipe of chili last week.  It had three different beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce, onions, beef, and spices.  I used 96% lean ground beef, and 1 1/3 (one and a third) cups (pretty generous serving) has 290 calories.  I would imagine without the beef, it would have been less than 200 calories per cup.  Again, not sure if this is helpful, but it was one of the best I've ever tasted.  I'm sure it could be make without the beef, with adding another can of beans.

Yeah they have 'barmak' in Mongolia too. I had it once with horse meat, but only because the family's old nag had died... not the greatest! I'm not a huge fan of horse, I've had better horse steaks but even when it's well cooked it still seems... stringy? somehow.

I'm also definitely not a fan of airag, the alcoholic fermented mare's milk... blech.

Just curious, what country did you grow up in?

Care to share? I love making soup.

I just wanted to jump in here... I have a bag of chicken pot stickers in my freezer that I got from Trader Joe's... For 7 dumplings, the total is 230 calories.

So, it really does depend on the size!

Here's the link to the chili recipe, Alycia. http://www.cbs8.com/Global/story.asp?s=112832 99&clienttype=pri... ;

The only thing I would do differently next time is use only half the crushed red pepper and half the chili powder it calls for.  You can always add more, if you wish.  It's quite spicy.  Oh, and I did not use the red pepper sauce.

I'm definitely NOT a cook, Alycia, but I was thrilled with the way it turned out.  Wink  And, despite the number of ingredients, it was truly easy to make

I'm making another pot this week to take to my old work place on Friday for the Halloween potluck.

If you decide to try it, I hope you enjoy it.  Laughing

Thanks Robin, sounds just the thing to put in my baked potato tomorrow. I'm going to put it in the slow cooker in the morning.

Thanks again Smile

Great, Alycia!  I hope you enjoy it.  Please let me know.  There are so many different ways to make chili, but this is one of my very favorites. Laughing

I think it's because the meat is leaner so it's easy to over cook. Plus the horse moves more, so that could be the reason also.

Mmm airag, aka Kumiz. It wasn't all that popular/available in the city but when I visited the country side with my Mom I quite enjoyed locally made one. :)

I grew up in Kazakhstan. Although I went after my Russian side of the family instead of Kazakh side, like my mom, so I look nothing like her. lol

I loved this chilli recipe btw. I used passata instead of the tomato sauce and put in all the spices and the red pepper sauce, beautiful!

Hi there, seattle - it's really hard to estimate something like this without knowing the ingredients. You could be one of those apostates who believe chili shouldn't contain beans :)

However, given that you've asked about calorie content of two homemade dishes, maybe you're not aware of the recipe analyzer on the site: http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/recipe_analy sis.php

You can enter in ingredients and amounts. It can be a little finicky sometimes - there are tips in the Foods sections and various threads on the boards. But you'll get a much more accurate count following your recipe rather than hoping the rest of us make our chili/potstickers the same way as you.

Also - I love stuffed dough. Pork gyoza and potato and cheese petahe have to be my favorite, though.
