are potatoes good to eat?
I don't eat potatoes very often, but we picked up a bag at the store recently. I don't know why, but I feel guilty having one. I had one last week. heated it up in the microwave, mashed it a little bit with skin and all on the plate, added a little bit of light salt and pepper and half a table spoon of butter. I ate it with other veggies for dinner.
I don't know why i'm looking for reassurance, but potatoes are healthy right? Very carb loaded, but okay if I eat once a week?
Yes, they are ok. Go forth and enjoy them! lol If you eat the skin you get fiber also, plus additional nutrients.
That being said, not a big fan of microwaving them. Just do not taste the same, boiling and baking are my ways. I like them baked, then I mix it with fage, soy sauce or magi, and diced green onions. ![]()

potatoes are excellent for you, very nutritious and delicious. The only part that raises the calories is the choice of what you put on top.
I've used plain yogurt (fage is Greek yogurt and very good, another good brand is Oikos). I also love dumping a ton of salsa on top! Never tried soy sauce, but will certainly do so next time.
If you are trying to lose weight, don't fry them in oil, don't drown them in butter, and watch the amount of bacon and cheese.
Better still to get away from such traditional ways with the spud and try something new...my Mom loves hers with chili on top. A vegetarian chili on top of the potato is wonderful and very low cal.
Mmm. Chili potatoes sound good. I like a butter, so I only use a table spoon. I think i'm going to go bake one up, (oven this time!) and see what I can do to make it tasty.
with chili, or yogurt you won't need the butter. Have fun experimenting with toppings!
yes, they're VERY good for you! the reason why they have such a bad reputation is because of the toppings most people put on them. (cheese, sour cream, tons of butter, etc.) and they do have carbs, but that's not a bad thing.
and heck, I eat them almost everyday and I'm fine! go ahead, have them more than once a week if you want.
Mmm. I have made the best potato ever. I baked it, and then mashed it. I mashed it with water(odd, but it worked). I seasoned it with parsley, salt, pepper, and meat seasoning. It tastes delicious. the meat seasoning really gives it a zing. I also used a few quick sprays of a "0" calorie butter flavored cooking spray, and I have some green beans to back up the potato.
Why only once a week? Potatoes are a great unrefined carbohydrate, and are very nutritious. I would say eat them every day, except for the fact that variety is always best. But don't feel you have to restrict them!
Yes, potatoes are fine. Sweet potatoes are especially good for you. They are a vegetable. Veggies are good.

You feel guilty because you've probably been told that potatoes make you fat.... That and about a 15 year marketing campaign by the low-carb industry doesn't help either. "Taters r bad, K?" "Bread's bad, K?"....... LOL!
Potatoes are a good choice as part of a healthy diet. Like anything else you wouldn't want to live on them exclusively 100% but they're a good mix of starch, fibre, C vitamins and all for a relatively low 80 cals per 100g raw weight.
Very versatile too... Enjoy spuds.

No !! they are not good !! stay away from potatoes !! Potatoes and most starchy-carbohydrates increase insulin-levels, and elevated insulin-levels increase fat-storage, water-retention and weight gain. So if you wanna lose weight fast, high protein diet, along with green vegetables like brocoli, and green cabbage and maybe 1 apple a day is the way to go if you want to lose weight efficiently.
So again if you want to lose weight get your protein from these sources: Chicken, egg-beaters, whey-protein, fish, egg-whites, 1% milk, turkey, turkey ham
And your carbohydrates from these sources: green-cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, green-salads and 1 or 2 apples a day. But stay away from starchy-carbohydrates like white and brown breads, potatoes, pasta, rice, cakes, cookies, plaintains, and all foods made with flour
Hope this tip helps u in your quest for weight loss

Huh.
Anywho, potatoes with the skin left on are very nutritious. As long as you're within your calorie allotment for the day, you're fine.

Listen to my advice please: I am an expert on fat-loss, i am a member of Protein Power bloggers, and bodybuilding forums. And the way to go lose fat, lose weight fast and look like a celebrity model, is low-carb or even no-carb at all. In fact most of the celebrities like Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansen, Enrique Iglesias and Shakira is following a strict low-carb diet, and even zero carbs on some days. They do eat carbohydrates of course, but the sources of carbohydates of thin celebrities are brocoli, green-cabbage, green-salads and a couple of fruits a day low in glycemic index (G.I) such as maybe 1 apple a day, a couple of oranges, or 1 peach.
I am not trolling lying or decieving anybody. From my own personal evidence on fat-loss, i look a lot better i lose a lot weight faster and my muscles look better and more in shape, on the days i eat really low in carbs, and higher in low-fat proteins lik chicken-breasts, egg-whites, egg-beaters, whey-protein powder, etc.
Hope you guys take my adivice, take care
.
binge_eater- is that you in the picture? (SORRY?? I had to ask) sorry for high-jacking the potato thread.
I love potatoes! They are my favorite food. I try to avoid resturant french fries though... too many calories and bad fats - from the oil.
Sorry dude...........that's some pretty narrow minded nutritional advice. I understand that for some people carbs are the boogie man, like yourself, but contrary to popular belief a balanced diet that includes carbs is the best diet for any and all purposes of losing, gaining or maintaining. The downside is, it isn't sexy or based on half truths that then can be manipulated to sound like the last coming
........Keep researching.
I dice my potatoes and then I dump a rosemary, garlic, or whatever I'm in the mood for eating along with a tsp of olive oil in a cooking bag and throw it in the microwave. Of course, it tastes better from the oven or on a grill, but I'm lazy sometimes and it's a quick snack.

I don't know if binge_eater is trying to pass that photo off as a photo of himself...but it's NOT. It's a photo of William Levy Gutierrez (model/actor).

I'm guessing the reason he has a problem with binge eating is because he restricts the foods he eats too much. There are so many self-proclaimed "experts" on this site who think their restrictive ways of eating are healthy when they're actually a form of eating disorder.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating potatoes.
carbs are not bad and a part of a balanced diet. You do want to stay away from simple carbs and try for more complex. But potatoes will not make you fat. I eat a baked sweet potato 2-3 days a week and I am not fat. Sweet potatoes are considered a super food. http://americanfood.about.com/od/keytipstechn iques/a/5superfoods.htm
http://www.cspinet.org/nah/10foods_bad.html
You want to eat potatoes in moderation just like everything else. They use to think eggs and coffee were bad for you also.
