are potatoes good to eat?

Quote  |  Reply

I don't eat potatoes very often, but we picked up a bag at the store recently. I don't know why, but I feel guilty having one. I had one last week. heated it up in the microwave, mashed it a little bit with skin and all on the plate, added a little bit of light salt and pepper and  half a table spoon of butter. I ate it with other veggies for dinner.

I don't know why i'm looking for reassurance, but potatoes are healthy right? Very carb loaded, but okay if I eat once a week?

Potatoes can be great.  I highly recommend the baby potatoes of a variety of colors a couple of those are fantastic with just a touch of salt or pepper.  There's red, yellow, purple, white, brown, and I'm sure other varieties that I haven't run across yet.

Be aware that binge_eater did post recently that cauliflower was a starchy vegetable to be avoided despite the fact that it is in the same family as broccoli and is truly not a starchy vegetable.  Many of his posts have kernels of good information but you truly have to take them with a grain of salt to counteract the get skinny quick diet information that he has incorporated from all of these stars who apparently eat celery with a side of tuna.

I should sign up for a financial planning website... then I'd be a money-making genius.

*sigh* It's really sad to see people seperate foods into 'good foods' and 'bad foods'. No food is bad!!! But if you ate nothing but potatoes all day, that could be a problem.. You'd be missing out on dozens of vital nutrients. Just because potatoes have carbs doesn't make them any more likely to make you store fat. If you eat an overall, well balanced diet with plenty of green veggies, fruits, lean proteins, dairy, and grains, you should have no problem! And this goes for anyone regardless of your goal (weight loss, maintenance, or gain). So enjoy your potatoes!!! :)

The Irish ate very little other than potatoes for generations and it wasn't a problem until the potatoes went away...

I am not on the anti-potato band wagon but I don't agree that there are no bad foods. There is nothing good about trans-fats, artificial sweeteners, highly processed foods and so on. There are definitely foods and additives you should avoid but potatoes are not one of them.

I looked at your other posts and I must say, I don't really believe that you're an expert because you tell people to eat as much broccoli as they desire but to stay away from cauliflower. XDDD seriously, what kind of 'expert' would say that?

I agree. What makes him an expert. Maybe a self appointed expert. There is something to be said for clean/balanced eating. It is not all about having zero body fat Wink I am lean and have good muscle tone and I eat well, potatoes and cauliflower included.

 Ha ha... verrrry funny......

littleshellys: I agree, that those things in excessive amounts can be unhealthy, but does that really make them 'bad foods'? Anything in excess is bad, whether it be potatoes, sweets, vegetables, meat, etc. The key is to have a well balanced diet that has a bit of all the food groups, including some sweets.

Listen to my advice please: I am an expert on fat-loss, i am a member of Protein Power bloggers, and bodybuilding forums. And the way to go lose fat, lose weight fast and look like a celebrity model, is low-carb or even no-carb at all.  In fact most of the celebrities like Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansen, Enrique Iglesias and Shakira is following a strict low-carb diet, and even zero carbs on some days.  They do eat carbohydrates of course, but the sources of carbohydates of thin celebrities are brocoli, green-cabbage, green-salads and a couple of fruits a day low in glycemic index (G.I) such as maybe 1 apple a day, a couple of oranges, or 1 peach.

I am not trolling lying or decieving anybody. From my own personal evidence on fat-loss, i look a lot better i lose a lot weight faster and my muscles look better and more in shape, on the days i eat really low in carbs, and higher in low-fat proteins lik chicken-breasts, egg-whites, egg-beaters, whey-protein powder, etc.

Hope you guys take my adivice, take care

.

Does this bring back bad memories of pre- caloriecount.com weight loss attempts for anyone else?  Sure makes me appreciate how rational the majority of posters are here!

I believe, like I said there are "bad" foods. I don't believe that everything in moderation is OK. Chemicals added to foods, transfats, artificial sweeteners. I don't seen any benefit at all in any of those and believe they are bad for your health in any amount. That is just my opinion though. Everyone has to choose for themselves.
