Power Up Your Mornings

By kimfitness on May 06, 2012 10:00 AM in Tips & Updates

10 minute Bursts of Morning Movement for Energy All Day

According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, doing at least 10 minutes of physical activity at a time can strengthen your muscles and make your heart, lungs, and blood vessels healthier. Although we often hear of exhausting 30-60 minute workout sessions that might seem impossible, it is only recommended that every person gets in at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate level activity or 1 hour and 15 minutes of intense activity each week. How you spread this out is up to you.  However, it’s best to spread your exercise time throughout the week so you can avoid over-training.

Try to dedicate 3-4 mornings per week to exercising at your maximum level for only 10 minutes, then pick 1-2 other days for a longer (30-45 minutes), not as vigorous workout.  You will notice your energy level increases and you will be more likely to stick with your exercise regimen longer since you are managing your exercise time wiser.

Below is a 10 minute workout that I recommend doing in the mornings before you start your day and a link to a video of me doing it.

Power Morning Workout
Always warm up and stretch before beginning.  A short walk or jog in place is sufficient.

Jump rope (pretend like you have a rope if you don’t)

Exercise Time: 60 seconds

Tempo: As fast as you can

Break for 30 seconds

Single Arm Squat Swings (weight in left hand)

Exercise Time: 30 seconds

Tempo: Slow and controlled

No Break

Single Arm Squat Swings (weight in Right hand)

Exercise Time: 30 seconds

Tempo: Slow and controlled

No Break

Squat Jumps

Exercise Time: 60 Seconds

Tempo: As fast as you can

Break for 30 seconds

Tricep Chair Dips (right leg extended)

Exercise Time: 30 Seconds

Tempo: Slow and controlled

No Break

Tricep Chair Dips (left leg extended)

Exercise Time: 30 Seconds

Tempo: Slow and controlled

No Break

Repeat the entire circuit one more time smile and begin your day.  Make sure you stretch after you are done. I always stretch while I am brushing my teeth.

Another tip that might help you is to write down what you do each time you work out. The next time try to match or beat your numbers. This is a fun and effective way to challenge yourself to do more.

you really think 10minuts is enough time??? REALLY???

I love the simplicity of this workout. I am just starting to exercise, I 'm overweight, and I have bad knees. Can you suggest any modifications? Thanks.

This is where I have started although it takes me longer-15 to 20 minutes. If you want to read more check out mercola.com and search Peak 8 programs. They give you all the science behind why it good for you.

Loved the article, very helpful, the picture chosen to go with the article........what were you thinking?  CC, in my experience, has always represented real people with realistic goals and given solid advise.  The photo will definitely get the readers attention but does not represent the CC population.  Bad form.

This does help, i enjoy reading things like this. Its motivational for me.

Stop complaining about the time limit being so short. "10 minutes isn't enough to lose weight, waaaaaaaah!"  All you REALLY need to lose weight is to take in less calories than you use. That's it.

Now, you might not lose the weight where you want it gone; you might still have a flabby belly and "water wings", but the weight itself will be lost. That's what exercise is for.

I thought she was jogging and they were on the up bounce.  :-)  One reason I NEVER run.  I don't mind the up bounce so much, but I hate hate hate hate the down bounce.

Nice attitude, fail.  I think you misunderstood me though -- I am not "complaining."  I just think telling people you only need to exercise 10 minutes a day/at a time is misleading.  The only person this amount of exercise would benefit is someone previously sedentary - like bedridden-for-6-months sedentary!

And to continue getting fitter,  you need to keep adding challenge to your routine - what happens after your body adapts to 10 minutes and you don't step it up? Answer: very little.

As you say,  in order to lose weight,  you need to take in fewer calories than you burn - "that's what exercise is for."  BUT, if you only exercise 10 minutes a day,  that's probably between 60 - 125 calories burned from exercise for a moderately obese person.  That's a drop in the bucket.  Even at the high end,  that's only 875 exercise calories burned in a week,  which is equal to one quarter of a pound of fat!

If you only want to do 10 minutes a day,  be my guest! You can cheer me on in the marathon I'm walking later this year!

But if you want/need to lose significant weight,  you gotta do more.  And its not a complaint -- I love exercise! It has so many other benefits besides calorie burning/weight loss, like toning, fighting depression, anxiety, and stress, social benefits, bone-building benefits - why on earth would I limit myself to 10 minutes!??  That's just crazy - that's why I think these low bars set for people by gov't agencies etc aren't doing our obese society any favors.

I think the point of the article is to get previously sedentary people active without it seeming like a daunting task.  I used to weigh over 300 lbs (lost 70 lbs and counting) and of course, I HATED exercise   However, I started off with 10 minutes everyday.  It is hard for someone so heavy to be told - you have to do 30 -60 minutes daily or whatever.  I eventually added 5 minutes, 10 minutes and even morning and evening workouts.  It helps give a foundation for starting an active life without it seeming like "this is something I could never do".  If you can get started and stay consistent with the 10 minutes then you will eventually build on it.  I did...........

Thanks!

What is with all the negative? This website is all about positive lifestyles ect. Stop hating on the pretty girl in the picture. Just because she is naturally pretty does not mean that she is "airbrushed"

I go to the gym almost immediately after work, still wearing makeup and with my hair curled. You can still look decent at the gym, in fact shouldn't each of us do our best to always look presentable?

Also, I see many large busted ladies at my gym that quite a few of their tops expose some of their cleavage. I can clearly see they are not wearing any push up bra.

I like this comment:

"Stop complaining about the time limit being so short. "10 minutes isn't enough to lose weight, waaaaaaaah!"  All you REALLY need to lose weight is to take in less calories than you use."

^ very TRUE. Given adding excersize to the equation will  help you meet your goals much more efficently. But yes 10 min of excersize is absolutely enough if you are dieting right and committing to this lifestyle.

The article caught my attention, that's all I have to say about that (I'll have to admit though I didn't read it) ;-).

As a buxom runner, I "double-bag" mine - 2 sports bras, one underwired and cantilevered like the Golden Gate Bridge, then over the top goes one that goes halfway up your throat and down your midriff and turns your chest into one giant flat mono-boob. No it's not attractive but it really works, there's neither an up nor a down bounce. The only problem is that now my stomach jiggles more than my chest does!

I totally agree with you!!

Instead of being jelous about the model in the picture, focus on what the actual message of the article is, and focus on your self and how to improve your self confidence. I'm sure this gal is simply- a model- so that's all her purpose in this picture is- to look pretty and maybe motivate others to do what makes them feel pretty. Maybe then you'll go to the gym with a touch of make up on or even if not, at least you'll still feel beautiful while working towards your goals. Your self esteem will not raise by just loosing weight. There's much more to it then that. Learn to love yourself, learn to love others. Stop hating on women because they are more fit than you, or what you see as, more attractive than you.

I don't think I commented about her fitness. I ride 50 miles on my bike 3x a week. I don't feel her boobs need to be hanging out of her shirt in a forum of men and women trying to stay fit and/or lose weight. Again, it's the media and how they pose women on how they look. So piejj, I'm not jealous - I'm strictly talking about how the media poses what everyone is supposed to look like. (And I do like the way I look - I'm 46.)

I disagree with the whole "how the media poses what everyone is supposed to look like" idea. The notion that women should be pin thin, blue eyed, blondes is that of the past. There are beautiful, successful plus sized models all over the country. Congrats on your health and lifestyle at such an age, I'm sure you are inspiring to many. (I was not directing my first comment souly at you, but rather the entirety of all of the ladies posts throughout the blog)

I think this article is right on.  I started a program like this at the beginning of the year, and have seen great results. Not only losing weight, but feeling so much better through out the day. My 10 minute workout, not including warm-up, cool-down, is very intense,  and non-stop. It really wakes me up in the morning and keeps me going through out the day. I also do a less intense longer workout 3-4 days a week in the evenings. I also try to always watch what I eat. And its working. But I do love my quick morning workout.

I gave this a shot this morning just 10 minutes. I like to change things up. Also, I think I was the person the snooze button was created for. Think I will try this at least one day a week in addition to me other work-outs.

It's s 10-minute workout to start your day, which is a great idea. It is not an endorsement of only exercising for 10 minutes a day. Calm down, peoples.

People should read with more attention to what the article says! 10 minutes of excercise at a time, NOT a day, to start your morning...after all who has much time in the morning for working out. It also says, pick 1-2 other days for a longer one (30-45 minutes).

I don't know about most people here but I like the idea of having few but short workouts at suitable time instead of a long one for an hour or so. I have back and knee problems so can't put too much tension, small workouts are perfect for me and they do the job, also I don't feel so exhausted afterwards and I certainly feel much more motivated to stick to my excercise routine every day

Do you really think no heavy-chested people do any exercise? She isn't even heavy chested, and you assume that she must be wearing a push-up bra! She does have a cleavage-like impression but that may be from motion (running). Also, she does not look air-brushed.
