Powerlifting exercises - Anyone else do them? (Deadlifts, clean and press, etc)
Does anyone else on the forum incorporate any powerlifting exercises into their routines such as deadlifts, clean and press, etc. ?
The deadlift was always an exercise I steared clear of, and now I absolutely love doing it. It has added a lot of size onto my trap area and given me some good definition/muscle in my back as well as my legs. I also have gotten great results doing the power clean and press. I have found that powerlifting exercises have a tendency to release the human growth hormon naturally in your body that leads to more muscle and better strength gains. Sprinting is also a great way to release the HGH as well.
By adding powerlifting exercises and sprinting workouts (HIIT) into my weekly routine, I have gotten extremely good results.
The power lifting exercises are squats, bench press and deadlift. The clean and press (along with the snatch) are the olympic lifts.
All of which are great and should be the foundation of most programs.
Dead, squat, & bench - ah, they're wonderful. :)
I used to be the typical girl - I ran 5x a week and did yoga. I made the switch to heavy lifting about a year and a half ago and haven't looked back since. It made me stronger and it did absolutely awesome things for my shape. I just can't recommend it enough... I've only gotten one of my friends to try barbell squats and I'm not sure she appreciated it: she couldn't walk for a week afterwards.
I'm trying to teach myself the olympic lifts right now. The book I'm using (yes, book... it's a small town, I've got nobody to coach me) has me learning the snatch before the clean/jerk. So, I'm working on mastering overhead squats at the moment. :)
I've just started doing things like this... loving it!
Though I was wondering.. is it true that you should try and eat extra protein if you want these exercises to have the most effect? I'm a total lifting virgin so any advice would be lovely :)
I've been doing deadlifts and I just got squat cleans in my newest program that I'll start next week. I'm scared! But I'm told that once you get the technique, you progress pretty quickly.
Great exercises. Even if you only did squats and nothing else, it will incorporate size & definition. Besides outright deadlifts, incorporate stiffed-legged deadlifts to make the calves grow as well. Remember, never ever sacrifice form for weight! Once you've got techniques and form down-pat, remember to "cycle" your given exercises every few weeks (4-6) i.e. work the targetted body parts but change the exercise slightly to still target the given body part yet not with the exact same exercise to insure steady growth/progress and not over-training.
What is powerlifting?
I love squats and deads! Yesterday I added 10 pounds to my squat... go me! Guess I hadn't been doin it heavy enough before ;]
I'm always paranoid that my deadlift form is wrong though :[
clean and press is awesome too, haven't done them in a while though!

What is powerlifting?
A form of competitive weight lifting where competitors try to get the highest possible total weight lifted between the squat, bench press and deadlift. 3 attempts at each lift, highest weight lifted for each lift is counted towards the total.
i wuv em, altho my lame gym doesn't have a barbell so im limited. my bum looks nearly 80% better when i bend over.
but my other gym did but it was so hard to even get to one. one day i will have my own home gym.
