ppl in college help!!: worried about being able to exercise in college :- \
heyy heyy. ill be a senior this yr in hs. next yr, im off to university of de. they have a gym there (i toured there a few wks ago and made it top priority to make sure they did!!!)
i know college is a busy time: adjustments, classes, big campuses, studying and such.
do u guys (in college) have time to exercise everyday, like run a mile, or go to the gym for an hr?? its important part of my life. and i wanna make sure i can still have it be a part of my life nxt yr in college, so i can stay in shape.
thx. xoxo
I go to school full time and work part time, and I'm able to exercise about 3-4 times a week. I don't think I'd be able to do it every day. If you're just taking classes though, I don't think it would be a problem.
I've been in university for years - almost done law school now. I have always worked at least 15 hours a week, volunteered at least 5 hours a week, maintained an A- average and at times had significant family responsibilities - and ALWAYS had at least 1 hour a day to exercise (albeit, sometimes I stupidly chose not to!).
If you make it a priority, it is actually easier to exercise during university than during high school, or when working full time. The key to everything in school is prioritizing - good luck and have lots of fun.
ETA: I'm a senior with a full course load, I have always worked throughout college, and maintained a 4.0/4.0 gpa average. There have been times when I majorly slacked off from my fitness routine, but this year I have made a commitment, and it all still somehow gets done! I think I actually have more energy because I consistently workout.
Everyone's right...you just have to make the time!
I'm finishing up my BA in psychology and will finally be finished this December. I have always worked full time, plus another side job - nannying - and maintained a full load of classes.
I usually go to class in gym clothes because the only time I have to work out is between a couple of my classes or something...you don't care so much about dressing cute to go to classes once you're in college. LOL. I prefer to do my workouts in the evenings, but it doesn't always work out that way, so I plan ahead. Planning time to workout works for me, because it's really easy to just say "I'll have plenty of time to do it later", and something comes up - dinner, cheesecake, homework, a date, The Bachelor, or your neighbor knockin on your dorm door with guy probs - and you can't get around to it.
thx for the advice. u make me feel less paranoid about being able or not being able to workout next yr.
i will most certainly prioritize my sched to fit in exercise. it feels so good and makes ya feel so accomplished, like youve done something good, and best yet, good for yourself. =)
how ironic i go to the university of delaware!! in all honesty ive never been in better shape! first of all, I walk EVERYWHERE! it really makes a difference cause at home I would always drive! And there is more than enough time to go for a run / get to the gym everyday. The campus is gorgeous so i loveeee running through it and there are 4 gyms too! You'll have nooo problem exercising and staying in shape as long as you keep the commitment :)
when i toured there, my tourguide showed me the gym that looks like a big white dome. it was all so overwhelming. 8-0
ok, thats good to hear. as long as i can exercise daily, im happy.
do u like it at UD?
yup you definately can. i love it! its cool that its a 'medium sized' school because you see new faces each day yet recognize a bunch of people too. the campus is beautiful with soo many different people and so much to do.. footballs big too so the games are really fun to go to also. school work gets tough but if your on top of it you'll do fine and still have time off to have fun during the weekends! good luck with everything!
thx. =) i cant wait. hs is old news lol
dont be intimidated by the "Freshman 15."
This only pertains to those who drink a ton, or dont know how to use there resources wisely.
When I got to college...I actually lost weight due to the easy gym access and friends to go with :)
so dont worry, Im sure if you care about your body enough and understand the consequences of eating unhealthy--than you will be fine!
I drank a ton and still lost weight.
I didnt mean it in a bad way. I drank too--- im just saying when people talk about the freshman 15...they're talking about binge drinking.
As long as you take time out to take care of yourself you will be fine.
i make time everyday to exercise. i love it. =)
I find i'm still able to have a decent social life, work, and exercise while still applying myself to university.
It almost entirely depends on how you delegate your time and how much motivation you have.
I know people who can take a full course load, pt job, and volunteer, and are still able to do the things they enjoy, whereas I know other people who go to school only part time and can't find the time (or are too lazy) to do anything else.
They're right... you have to MAKE time. Here are some tips for working out in college:
(1) find a friend to go with... i don't know about you, but i used to hate working out with someone else, wanting the alone time and all that. However, having a buddy to convince you to go when you'd rather sleep or veg out watching grey's with the ramen is a huge help
(2) study while working out... depending on what machines you use, you can get a ton of reading done while doing cardio (i'm always on the elliptical with a book). If you have terms you have to learn for a class such as foreign language, drill through every thing you can remember while doing resistance/weight training and then check how much you remembered and did right when you return to the dorm.
(3) take a break... if you're studying or working on a paper for a long period of time, take a short break to exercise. My roommate and i had a nightly seven minute ab routine. We also had 10 minute dance parties. You go back to you work much more energized and focused
hope that helps!!
