Predistrone steroid pills and exercise
My doctor put me on steroid pills over the last week for this rash that I've had for two weeks, and lately when i've been exercising I notice that my heart seems to be beating way faster than normal, and then I end up slowing down and I don't get as good of a workout. Even now my heartbeat is weird. I asked her before I took them if I'd be okay with my weight loss and exercise and she said it's fine. I started taking 2 pills for 4 days, and I take one pill every day now and then next week I only am supposed to take half a pill because apparently it's bad to suddently stop taking them but I want to stop taking it...I hate adding abnormal medicine stuff to my body. Has anyone else had a bad experience from predistrone steroid pills?
You CAN'T just stop taking steroids once you've started or you'll get very very very sick. You have to taper them off slowly like the doctor said to... if it's having a bad effect on your exercising, give the exercise a rest until you finish the pills, but it would be dangerous to stop cold turkey.
First of all talk with your doctor. I'm a rn and it could be dangereous if you don't follow your docs advice. Steroids can make you feel weird and cause your heart to speed up and your glucose levels to rise. It's only for a little while so slow down the exercise if it makes you feel strange.
Prednisone is a very serious medication. DO NOT go off it without talking to your doctor. For people who have been on it a long time, going off it suddenly can cause a heart attack. This is an extreme example, but the effects of sudden withdrawal are not predictable at any dose - especially in a first-time user.
Prednisone affects your hormones. It may make you feel unusually hungry, keep you up at night, and make your cheeks puffy. This is all temporary. It would be best to lay off the exercise until you're off the pills or until you can talk to your doctor about it.
Apparently the suffering I'm having (lack of sleep, weird heartrate, gross feeling) is because I'm tapering off it. I only have two more days of being on a half pill of it. I really really really want to go on a nice long run. I can't, so I think I'll go to the gym and exercise on the treadmill so that I can keep track of my heartrate and not get a heart attack. Last time I ran on the treadmill it said my heartrate was 175! The 80% range is 160...that seems pretty dangerous. Maybe I should walk on incline for an hour or something.
