Prednisone and Birth Control

I didn't think to ask my doctor initially, but was wondering if the steriod Prednisone will lessen the effects of my birth control medicine.  I am taking Ortho-tri-cyclen lo.  I took it for 20 days due to a bad poison ivy outbreak.  I searched on line and couldn't really get an answer.  Any help would be appreciated.

You need to call and ask.  It is very dangerous to get pregnant on prednisone.

 Lol...I had to take prednisone for a poison ivy outbreak too, it was spreading even though I was no longer having contact with the plant 4 weeks later...so they put my on prednisone for 1.5 months. 

Honestly I think I avoided sex at all during that time.  Just because of the risks to a pregnancy associated with predinsone. 

I am pretty sure that steroid based drugs Do affect birth control. Definately do some more research as I am not 100% sure, but last time I was put on a steroid-based 'zpak' for a severe infection I think I remember a strong suggestion to abstain. good luck finding out though!

Oh great!!  Well I am not taking the prednasone anymore.  I haven't in about 10 days, and if I did get pregnant during that time I am not far along.  My period should come on Monday.  I guess I was just wondering if it effected the pill.  I will call and ask my doctor today.  Thanks for the feedback.

I called my gyn and they refered me to my pharmacist.  So I called the pharmacist and he said the prednisone should not have an effect on the effectiveness of my birthcontrol medicine, but the bc pill does have an effect on how well the prednisone breaks down in my body.  Probably the reason I had to take 2 packs of the meds to clear my poison ivy up.
