I had a terrible allergic reaction to one of my medications once, and was prescribed prednisone for it. I was only on it for a few weeks though, but I was still losing weight fine. How long is your doctor prescribing it for?

I have ben in Prednisone since June. I started with 120mg/day, and am now at 20mg/day.

When at the higher dosis, I really ate like a bull, and put on approx 2 Kg/month.

I woul go crazy for anything with sugar, carbohydrates (Bread) and... wine. Now, at 20mg/day I have been able to go back to my routine diet, and it has been quite easy to control what I eat. The scale show I am now going back to where I was before.

So I guess that it will depend on the qty of Prednisone you'll have to take, as higher dosis can, yes, make you eat a lot more...

Good luck.

I took prednisone this past spring and was on it for 2 months. I didn't gain anything, and even lost a few pds during that time period.

I'm guessing that as with any medication, the possible side effects vary from person to person.

I'm actually thinking of asking my doctor to put me back on it for a few months.

I was on prednizone from Sept 05 through Dec 06 and put on a great deal of weight.

But part of it was from having servely damaged my back and not being able to move around much, and partly because I tried to make myself feel better by downing peanut M & M's like they were...well M & M's!!!!

Since I wnt off the prednizone I was able to get my cravings pretty much under control except for occassional binge lapses and I lost 55 lbs...Unfortunately my last binge put 20 back on but I'm taking it off quickly.

Pednizone is the Devils candy!

What is Pednizone?

Thank you for all of your responses...

I was given a high dose to control a severe asthma attack and bronchitis. They orginially had me on it at the hospital I was so sick I couldn't eat and barely drink anything for 4 days, yet I gained 6 lbs by the time I left...I lived off of chicken broth for several days after that... and then they put me down to preventative dosing and still gained a bunch of weight...

this time I just didn't fill the prescription...and took everything else.. I made it through...and finally feeling better Smile

Prednisone is a steroid used to treat certain types of inflamation...commonly used to treat Asthama attacks in conjuction with albuterol, xopenex, advair (low dose steroid), and other types of meds.

i don't know how relevant this is, but my cat is on prednizone.

I am a kidney transplant recipient and I am also taking prednisone each day.  I went from 119 lbs in March to 140 lbs in June. My doctor wants me to lose weight and exercise but I am supposed to take the pills with a meal and everytime I have a meal I am never full.  I hate that medication since I am only 5'1" 140 lbs is somewhat obese.  As far as I am concerned Prednisone should be banned

I was on prednisone for 18 months when I was in college and gain almost 50lbs! Which sucked, especially since I have been struggling to keep it off since.  But the drug worked, it did its job and if giving the same option over again I would take it in a min.  I just wish someone should have told me about the side effects.  O well.

My general recommendation is do what Ur dr says and if have concerns address it with them as soon as you realize your concerns.

Prednisone can cause cravings and a "hungry" feeling, even when you've already eaten enough food. I was on 120 mg of Prednisone for a bone marrow transplant, and blew up from around 83 lb. pre-transplant, to 180 pounds post-trasplant.

I'm a pretty extreme case, however, because I did absolutely nothing to try and curb my appetite. I ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it, including high-calorie drinks. 120 mg is a really high dose, as well.

Also, as soon as I stopped eating like a pig, I didn't lose weight, but I stopped gaining, too. It's going to be all about eating well, like I'm sure you normally do.

Also, keep in mind that Prednisone majorly makes you retain water. I guarantee you that, as soon as you stop taking it, a bunch of water weight will come off.

And one more thing to keep in mind-- Prednisone is an immune-suppressent medication. If you're on a high dose be extra careful about cleanliness, because it will be easier for you to get sick.

Deborah-- I'm very sorry to hear about your condition. It really is possible to stop gaining weight on high doses of Prednisone. Give yourself a break. You've obviously gone through something traumatic, and I'm sure that you'll get the hang of it. How long ago was your transplant? Do you have a support group that you can go to? I've been through 2 bone marrow transplants so, while not the same thing, if you ever want to talk about it, feel free to message me!

I also was on prednisone for months at 125mgs a day and finally tapered off to none.  I totally understand and HATE the weight gain that i incurred while on the pred.  I did lose 15 of the 30 pounds i gained on it pretty quickly which i think was just water and the moon face.  I am struggling to lose the rest.  I did search google for ways to lose weight on prednisone and there are lots of folks out there with their opinions.  The best is just keep exercising and realize that when you are off of it again,  you at least did your best to stay in shape.  Maybe it won't be that bad.
