Prednisone and weight gain question

Quote  |  Reply

Just got back from vacation and was put on prednisone: 60 mg for three days, 40 mg for three days, 20 mg for three days. The doctor says in so short of time I shouldn't gain weight but am curious if any of you counters could share your experience....

My biggest reason for being fat is Prednisone.  If this is the first time you are on it or there is a big gap between times, you will not gain weight.  For me i have to be on it for over 1 month or be on too many times in a 6 month time period.  What you can control is the feeling of being hungry all the time that you see with the longer doses.

Good luck

I gained over 100 lbs on steroids for medical reasons. Once it's on, it's really hard to get off. It makes you really hungry, too. It can also mess with your emotions and you may want to eat more as a result. I'd advise that you count everything you put in your mouth and stick with your healthy food plan. Be very self-disciplined and it will be easier in the long run. It's much easier to keep it off that get it off later! I've been stuggling for 10 years, but my doses were massive, and for a long time. The dosepak you're on shouldn't have too bad a result if you're not on it long. Just be mindful of what goes in your mouth during that time! :>)

Ack! Don't do it!
I got put on that stuff when i was 7, and gained about 20 pounds in a span of a couple weeks that I wasn't able to work off for a good two years. Seriously, seek an alternative!

Don't feel alone I was just put back on it for 6 days Cry

hopefully this time will not be bad beacuse i am watching very closely what i eat

I need to be on a constant low dose and am thankful for it.  I am now finally able to walk and breathe at the same time.  We "played" around for about a year finding what is wrong and just how to help, and 10mg a day does the trick.  If I go off I feel it in less than 3 weeks, longer than that and I can't walk across the hallway.  I will be tapering to 5mgs to see if that works as well.  In the meantime, I am now spending 60 minutes a day at the gym and working hard.  Hallelujah for breathing! I am hungry, but I am watching it closely.  I did gain about 30 pounds last year, but am determined to get it off this year.  But the trade-off is worth it.  I can breathe!

I think you need to focus on why you are supposed to take it and that your doctor gave it to you for that reason. Try to stay in the moment cause for many certain side effects don't happen. What causes an issue in one person may not for another. You are on this for such a short time as well plus try to trust your doctor and bring up continued concerns or side effects with him or her. I hope you feel better

it is a very nice thing to be able to breath :-)  And yes when my allergies or asthma act up i feel like you do, it is a good trade off

Prednisone is the best prescription drug ever made (you'll feel like a million $$$) and does so much damage to the body, including huge weight gains.

Maybe not w/this dose but once you've had it and feel better from whatever it is you have, you'll want it more and more. I started w/a methylprednisone 'pak' l(thats what you're on) 8 yrs ago. Took away all pain and I felt awesome. Now, after 8 years of arthritis and other pain issues, I cant take less than 14mgs daily or almost cant use my knees at all.

But Worst of all, I was underweight until 49 yrs old and now, 4 years later, am 40 lbs overweight. Trying very hard to lose weight for maybe the 3rd time this year Embarassed.  Losing weight while taking prednisone is a very long process, especially when joint pain is still a problem.

I suggest you ask for something else for your medical problem...its hard to say where one little prednisone pak can lead
