Prednosilone is evil
Hi everyone
Not sure if anyone has any info on this, but ive been on prednosilone (steriods)for 6 months now due to an auto immune condition, and ive stacked on 8kgs, not sure about the conversion on that.
Has anyone else had a problem like this? Im finding it IMPOSSIBLE to loose any weight, and im exercising like crazy, i must be doing something wrong... im slipping further and further into depression because im not loosing anything, but working harder then i ever have.
If anyones got any tips i would really appreciate it. I have a wedding coming up, and a bridesmaids dress that isnt going to fit!
My Mother has been on prednosilone (I always thought it was prednisone but I am an atrocious speller) on and off for a good 5 years or so now.
She also suffers from an auto immune condition. From what her doctors told her prednosilone is really hard on your kidneys and in turn will make you hold on to incredible amounts of water, so I wouldnt be surprised if a good 3 kilo's of what you have gained are serious water retention. My mother lost 3 kilo's the very week she was finally weened off the first time ( after a good year and a half on the drug).
The other thing they told her was that the drug makes you hungry, pretty much all the time. They told her to be sure her entire day was planned out meal wise. If you eat when you're hungry on this drug you'll just eat all the time.
My advice is to plan all meals and snacks (but dont beat yourself up if it doesnt always work out), focus on portion control, and try to fight the bloat! hot water with the juice from half a lemon is good to make you pee!
Hi I was on prednisone for most of my childhood (from elementary through high school) as I was a chronic asthmatic. I never managed to lose weight while on this medication (in fact I was obese as a child), even though I was very active in sports. As you are aware, prednisone is a steroid and I would imagine that therein lies the problem. I agree with vrykol, that the medicine makes you extremely hungry and therefore it is imperative that you plan your meals for the entire day, otherwise you may find yourself contstantly eating to fill the hunger pains. In addition, is there anyway you can talk to your doctor about alternative medicine. I noticed that predinose made me feel quite crappy as well.
Good Luck and hopefully you wont be on prednisone nearly as long as I was.
Sorry that you've had such a weight gain from it, I know that it is a common side effect.

Hey stephanie, my boyfriend has also been on prednisone and every time he gets on it, he gains a ton of weight. I was recently reading up on some medications that I'm on when I found some people in forums talking about being on steroids and then their doctors added another medication to their regimn to control the weight gaining effects. I don't know if it's true or how safe it is, but you might want to talk to your doctor about how to counteract the weight gain from your steroids. Most likely you're not doing anything wrong, it's almost definitely the drugs.
I would also suggest you talk to your doctor. One of the little discussed side-effects of steroids is depression. The first time I was given prednisone for severe poison oak, I found it to be a miracle cure for the poison oak, but I found myself severely depressed by the end of the full course (I think 2 weeks). So, the poison oak is long gone, but they are weaning me off the drug, and I am crying constantly, and even considering suicide (I am normally a quite cheerful person).
When I asked the doctor why he didn't warn me (this was many, many years ago) he told me that he didn't want an "hysterical" female response. Needless to say, I found another doctor, and now do everything possible to avoid poison oak and the need for prednisone. But when I do have to take it, I understand that the depression will go away as soon as I am off the drug. Good luck!
Hi Stephanie! I've been put on prednisone twice for MS exacerbations in the past year and gained 60 lbs as a result, so I definitely know what you're talking about! Luckily for me, though, I only had to be on them for about three months both times. I do know that prednisone makes you retain more sodium, so you should watch your intake. I would try to have only fresh foods/pre-packaged stuff. Also, like others have said, and you're probably aware, steroids make you hungry like nothing else!! Try to eat stuff that's less calories, but more filling. I like to snack on broccoli and apples, for instance. I would also talk to your doctor and see if he/she has any ideas that could help you if not lose weight, at least stop gaining. I know how easy it is to get depressed/angry when you're on steroids. Did your doctor prescribe you anything to take the "edge" off? If not, you may want to ask - it helps sooo much!!
Do you have to be on steroids much longer? It will definitely help when/if you're taken off of them.
Good luck to you!!! If you wanna talk, holler at me!
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
