Do you prefer "light" or "regular" bread?

out of curiosity, i was wondering who liked light or diet bread and who like good old regular bread and why. by regular i do mean whole wheat or multigrain,l not white wonderbread. does anyone eat white bread? what are the reasons. i like a good hearty piece of organic whole grain multigrain. its heartier, less processed and it TASTES better. i never could get used to the fluffyness of of weight watchers bread. what do you prefer?

I much prefer hearty, fresh baked whole wheat bread but I really can't afford to eat it, I go way over my calorie allotment when I do...so I eat healthy life diet bread.  Their wheat bread is decidedly untasty but the "italian" kind is almost, well, good.  I can make a decent hummus and turkey sandwich with it and not even hit the 200 calorie mark.

i definitely have the whole wheat grain bread (110 calories each), but having two pieces of those w/a cup of hot coffee is sooo much more filling than the lower calorie whole wheat grain breads. I tried the lower calorie ones, but i actually ended up eating more afterwards because i became hungry really fast.
Personally I can't stand the "diet" breads. I love the taste and texture of real whole grain bread and "diet" breads don't seem to survive in the toaster...when I toast bread I want warm bread not croutons. :-) We just eat less bread ...these days I make sandwiches with one slice (which are huge to begin with) cut in half and load it up with things I know don't cost too much in terms of calories: lettuce, cucumber, shredded carrot, bell peppers... and President's Choice PC Blue Menu deli meats.

We've also switched to the "mini" bagels, our grocery store sells them in multigrain(ok it's not perfect but it's not white either)  They're 120 cal each, and 4g protein 2.5g fat. They're the food guide "serving" of bread(rather than the "regular" size ones which are 2 to 2.5 servings) and the kids love to take them on lunches.

Well...that's my 2 cents :-)
I HATE "diet" bread, the light and fluffy kind that tastes like puffed up cardboard.  But I can't afford to eat the heartier kind, because often it's like 90-110 calories a slice.  I find that Nature's Own 100% Whole Wheat is pretty hearty for only having 50 calories a slice, so I buy that religiously.

This is an interesting topic.  I tried the Healthy Life wheat...the one with 40 cals a slice and it was ok.  BUT, dh won't eat it.  He won't go near it.  We've bought 2 loaves of bread a week for a while...white for him and Healthy Life for me.  That was getting expensive.  We switched to regular wheat a couple weeks ago at 65 cals a slice (store brand).  When I read the first ingredient though it said enriched wheat.  So although I did eat it last week I tried making a different purchase this week.  This week I think we ended up picking out a 100% wheat bread with 70 cals a slice.

What about rye bread people.  Does anyone eat/recommend a rye bread?

my mum bought weightwatchers sliced bread once (the malted danish kind) and ... ick. one 50cal slice was so thin you could practically toast three in one toaster hole. I did like thefact that the PBJ I made was only 250 cals instead of 350-400 like normal...but it was so tiny it just wasn't worth it.

My favorite bread is the oatmeal farmhouse batch from tescos. 125 cals per slice...so pretty indulgent but i eat it all the time. That or fresh homemade breadmaker bread in super duper chunky slices...hot from the oven....the butter melts right into it...butter and jam on that as toast is sOoOoO good

mind u some low calorie bread is nice. like ive eaten a decent sandwich many times with 80 or 70 cal slice bread...bread isnt so bad for calories actually, i never seem to think of it as 'bad'. its normally pasta and rice and noodles u gotta watch (like 90% carbs or somthing!)
Honestly, I can't tell the difference between most regular and diet versions.  I stick with 100 Calorie English Muffins in place of all my bread when I can.  Though as a child, my favorite was always Wonder, so I've always liked the fluffier, lighter breads.
For weight loss, I was eating Arnold Natural Flax & Fiber bread (80 cal/slice) and I liked the taste of it, though the slice is small.

Then I hit a plateau and switched to 40-45 cal/slice bread (Arnold Bakery Light and Weight Watchers -- not sure which one tastes worse!).  Sure enough, that broke the plateau.

If I wasn't trying to lose weight, I'd go for Arnold Whole Grains 12 Grain bread (110 cal/slice) -- big, delicious slices.  I can't wait 'til I start maintaining!!!
I love my own home made bread white or whole wheat depending on my mood but I keep it to one slice at a time, so as not to skyrocket my calorie count.

the weightwatchers bread is so small and thin its not even funny, it makes you REALLY feel like a big person on a diet, y'know?

i eat cinnamon raisin bread (90 cals a slice). YUMMMMY.

I actually like a bread here where I live called "The Perfect Bread" And it is!! It's whole wheat, only 39 cals per slice, big and not even thin!!
Its not fluffy either, I love it.
But as for other breads, I actually like the texture of the low cal breads then the regular ones xD

I honestly really like Healthy Choice 7 Grain bread. It doesn't make great toast - you can't toast it too much and must eat it fairly quickly. I use it in sandwiches or with low sugar jelly.

I like my 40-calorie-a-slce Oroweat Whole Wheat Light Bread. I can have FOUR slices of toast for just 160 calories, or two small sandwiches .... for the same bread calories/carbs as more substantive bread.  But, for those of you who prefer quality over quantity, I can sure see why you would want what my DH call "real bread!"

We buy both kinds in our house .... light bread for me and "real" bread for my DH ... so I can actually CHOOSE what I want. For some sandwiches, I use one of each! Smile

I lovelovelove whole wheat bread, the non-diet 12 grain or sourdough. I love pretty much any real wheat bread that is full of oats and stuff. Sara Lee makes the BEST sourdough bread, it is great for toasted sandwhiches or just as toast.
The thing about light and/or diet breads is that they are just a smaller size than regular bread. For instance, a slice of light bread might be 24 grams and a slice of regular might be 40 grams. Hence the seemingly huge calorie and carb difference. Either that, or the light/diet breads contain more fiber - but most often, that is not the case.
lite. they can keep the unwanted calories.
I make my own sourdough breads.  Bought  multigrain  bread and could barely taste the 'grains'.

Ordered a few pounds of multigrains, made my own ww sourdough bread and used 2 cups of multigrains and no sugar.

It's almost crunchy with the grains.  Makes fantastic toast, and no preservatives.
Nothing beats Wonderbread. :)
White or whole wheat.

I do love the ones with all the seeds and grains running through them though. And of course, Grandma's freshly baked bread !
Regular for me!  No question.  I am a bread lover.  It has been HARD to give up the white, but I've done it.  I also love the whole grains and seeds in my bread.  I like the 110-cal-a-slice variety myself, but I only do 1 slice/serving.  The larger slices make a very generous "half" sandwich, which I also load up with lots of goodies, such as a wad of baby spinach, cram it all in there, smash it down.  :-)  Or I do an open-face.  I used to buy 3 loaves of bread, one for every person in the house.  No more.  I buy what I LIKE and what is good for us, and I pick one that also tastes good!  My 2-year-old son also loves the "brown bread," which he calls "toast" even when it isn't.  Hehe.  He eats the same good, healthy, whole grain/wheat bread I eat and loves it.  Hubs, on the other hand . . . does not . . .
shhhhh.    *whispering*  No one knows this.........sometimes I buy a loaf of Wonder bread cause I'm nostalgic and think those red balloons on the bag are so happy looking.  (its really good too)
